<nettime-ann> MFA Creative Practice and Path to a Studio PhD in Art |
.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE International MFA Program in Creative Practice Transart Institute offers an international MFA program for working artists to develop a sustainable creative praxis with three summer residencies in Berlin; two winter residencies in New York City and individuale advisement during two school years - wherever students work and live. The low-residency program leads to a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Practice. Students are free to pursue work in any art-related genre and to create their own course of study, working independently and with the support of faculty and self-chosen studio advisors. Short periods of intensive residency permit students to continue with their professional work and keep a balanced personal life while participating in the program. Studio-based PhD A path to a studio-based PhD is in progress and practice-based doctoral programs are currently available through University of Plymouth. For more information or to subscribe to upcoming news about a Transart Institute PhD program please contact: [email protected] Summer Residencies The three summer residencies are both milestones and resources, taking place at the beginning middle and end of the two year program. Each residency begins with closure to the previous year’s studies through intensive critiques, exhibitions, presentation and performances. Residencies open with the graduate exhibition, performances and a public vernissage. Weeks one and three consist of studio workshops, week two focuses on cultural studies seminars. In addition, guest lectures, artist and curator talks and critiques as well as individual meetings with faculty take place each week in order for students to plan, inform and finalize the coming year’s project plans. Semester work Between residencies, students work individually with research advisors by correspondence and self-chosen studio advisors in an exchange which includes a minimum of two studio visits each semester. Summer Certificate Transart Institute also offers a summer program for artists who are not seeking a degree. Participants join MFA students in workshops, lectures and critiques and leave the residency with input on project plans for the year ahead. Artists attend the residency to get a creative surge, get a fresh perspective on their work, revitalize their practice, take their work in a new direction, make plans for a focussed praxis in the year ahead and to become part of an international community of artists, theorists and curators. Artists who successfully complete the residency will receive a non-credit certificate of attendance. Faculty and Guests for the summer 2010 residency include: Wafaa Bilal, MFA, Iraq/USA Lynn Book, MFA, USA Jean Marie Casbarian, MFA, USA Geoff Cox, PhD, UK/Denmark Claire Daigle, PhD, USA David Dunn, MFA, USA Nicolás Dumit Estévez, MFA, Dominican Republic/USA Carolyn Guertin, PhD, Canada/USA Mary Ting, MFA, China/USA Faculty bios are at: http://www.transartinstitute.org/Transart_Institute/Members.html The full summer program is online at: http://www.transartinstitute.org/Transart_Institute/Summer_program.html Students The majority of Transart students are emerging and mid-career artists and teachers at tertiary institutions. Transart Institute's residencies are a true meeting place for cultural exchange. Current students will converge for the summer residency from areas as diverse as Puerto Rico, Pakistan, Iceland, Croatia, Ethiopia, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Austria, Egypt, the Netherlands, the Philippines, the UK and the US. Program Goals The MFA Creative Practice is a student-centered postgraduate art program which fosters independent thinking, risk-taking and the creation of an informed and sustainable art praxis. The Institute is also a platform for faculty to expand their teaching praxis by making space for creativity and experimentation. Beyond it's educational goals, Transart Institute is engaged in building an international community in support of students, alumni, faculty and their artistic and academic goals. The institute offers its former students a virtual and material basis for artistic practice, the exchange of ideas, opportunities and critiques, thus inducing individual and collective growth beyond the duration of the program. Despite its small size, Transart Institute has become a place where the diverse and often incongruous experiences, philosophies and epistemologies of the post-colonial world can be in contact with each other.
