************************************************************************* ISMAR 2013 Call for Participation The 12th IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality Oct 1 - 4, 2013, University of South Australia, Australia http://ismar.vgtc.org/ ************************************************************************* The fields of Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR) seek to interactively mix virtual media with a person's perception of the physical world around them. Whether interactively combining physical and virtual objects and environments in 3D, or reacting to location or other aspects of a users context, these paradigms enable fascinating new types of user interfaces, and are beginning to show significant impact on industry and society. The field is highly interdisciplinary, and MR/AR concepts are applicable to a wide range of applications. Since 1998, ISMAR and its forerunner events, IWAR/ISAR and ISMR, have been the premier forums in this vital field. This year we are proud to present the 12th IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR 2013). The symposium will be held on Oct. 1 - 4, 2013 at University of South Australia, Australia. We invite you all to participate in this great event for the exchange of new ideas in this exciting field! * ISMAR 2013 now invites contributions to a range of categories: * - Papers and Posters to the Science & Technology (S&T) program - Papers and Posters to the Arts, Media and Humanities (AMH) program - Innovation Workshops - Informative Tutorials - Demonstrations - Art Exhibits - Tracking Competition * Science and Technology Program: * In recent years, Mixed and Augmented Reality has been expanding from an exciting research field into a commercially viable technology. The field is highly interdisciplinary, combining work in diverse disciplines, ranging from human centered research into user interfaces, interaction techniques, education, design, human factors, wearable computing and mobile computing, through more technology oriented research including computer graphics, display technology, computer vision, sensors, signal processing and computer networking. The growing interest in MR/AR applications is creating new challenges for research in all of these areas. We invite papers, posters, workshops, panels, tutorials submissions in the general field of Mixed and Augmented Reality. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, MR/AR aspects of: * Sensors - Acquisition of 3D scene descriptions - Calibration methods - Position and orientation tracking technology - Sensor fusion - Vision-based registration and tracking * Information presentation - Aural, haptic and olfactory augmentation - Display and view management - Mediated and diminished reality - Object overlay and spatial layout techniques - Photo-realistic rendering - Real-time rendering * User interaction - Collaborative MR/AR - Interaction techniques for MR/AR - Multi-modal input and output * System architecture - Display hardware - Distributed and collaborative MR/AR - Performance issues [real-time approaches] - Wearable and mobile computing - Online services and MR/AR * Human factors - Acceptance of MR/AR technology - Social implications - Usability studies and experiments * MR/AR Applications - MR/AR for Architecture - MR/AR for art, cultural heritage, or education and training - MR/AR for entertainment - Industrial and military MR/AR applications - Medical MR/AR applications - Personal MR/AR information systems * Arts, Media & Humanities Program: * The 2013 ISMAR Arts, Media and Humanities (AMH) program invites artists, designers, and scholars to explore the potential of Mixed and Augmented Reality. Artists and designers are invited to present and contextualize creative work in MR or AR media forms and to reflect on the place of these technologies in various fields of art and design. Scholars are invited to present work that analyzes or critiques AR/MR in the contexts of current social forms or the history of art and media. We welcome papers, posters, and demos, as well as proposals for panels and workshops. Topics of interest include Mixed and Augmented Reality works in relation to, but not limited to: * Media art - Performing arts - Art History - Architecture - Urban design - Game and toys - Cultural Heritage - Social media * Fields and approaches of interest include, but are not limited to: - Media Studies - Cultural Studies - Literary Studies - Game Studies - Practitioner Case Studies - Design research - Communications * Submission Categories * Submissions in the following categories are solicited. For detailed information on topics, submission and formatting, visit the website at http://ismar.vgtc.org/ . * Papers and Posters (S&T and AMH) Regular written papers and posters are solicited. All accepted papers and posters will be published in the ISMAR 2013 Proceedings and included in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Papers must have a minimum of four pages and maximum of ten pages, while posters are limited to two pages. Note, that there is only one category for papers - there is no distinction between full and short papers. The acceptance for publication will be partly based on the contribution per page of the paper. For example, a paper in six pages will be expected to have more contribution than one with four pages. Material simultaneously submitted to ISMAR 2013 and another venue will be rejected without review. Please see the web site at http://ismar.vgtc.org/ for full details. * Workshops ISMAR 2013 will have a series of workshops the day before the conference to cover innovative applications and newly emerging areas of MR/AR. ISMAR 2013 workshops are a complementary forum to the main conference. We invite you to submit workshop proposals with pioneering research and fresh application areas at themes from both Science & Technology as well as Arts, Media, & Humanities tracks. Please visit http://ismar.vgtc.org/ for detailed information on workshop proposals. * Panels We welcome panel proposals that address current challenges and opportunities in fields related to ISMAR, in a format that engages the audience in ways not possible in standard presentation formats. * Informative Tutorials The purpose of the tutorials is to expand the knowledge of the AR/MR community. Topics can range from introductory for AR/MR novices to highly technical for AR/MR researchers. We invite individuals or teams interested in presenting a tutorial to submit proposals. * Demonstrations and Exhibits ISMAR 2013 will provide exhibition space for demonstrations of MR/AR to the community. These demonstrations can take the shape of live, interactive demos, lab/corporate exhibitions, interactive art exploration, or combination of these. * Doctoral Symposium The inaugural ISMAR Doctoral Consortium will take place as part of ISMAR 2013. The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to create an opportunity for PhD students to present their research, discuss their current progress and future plans, and receive constructive criticism and guidance regarding their future work and career objectives. Details regarding the abstract submission will be available on the ISMAR website shortly. * Birds of a Feather Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) sessions provide the opportunity for groups of people who share interests, goals, technologies, environments, or backgrounds to meet at ISMAR2013 to conduct informal presentations, discussions and/or demonstrations. Details regarding BOFs will be available on the ISMAR website shortly. * Tracking Competition The first Tracking Competition at ISMAR'08 caught much attention. For ISMAR 2013, we will continue this tradition. Adelaide is located north of the Fleurieu Peninsula on the Adelaide Plains between Gulf St Vincent and the Mount Lofty Ranges. The city was founded in 1836 as planned capital for a British province in Australia. Today, Adelaide is known for it's many festival throughout the year and was listed in the Top 10 of The Economist's World's Most Liveable Cities index in 2010. The Adelaide city center is surrounded by the Adelaide Parklands, which separate the city from the surrounding suburbs. The central shopping street Rundle Street is located between Frome Street and East Terrace, and is home to many stores, cafes, restaurants, and wine bars. The conference location City East campus of the University of South Australia, is just 2 minutes away.
