In 1936, Walker Evans photographed the Burroughs, a family of
sharecroppers in Depression era Alabama. In 1979, Sherrie Levine
rephotographed Walker Evans' photographs from the monograph "First
and Last." In 2001, Michael Mandiberg scanned these same
photographs, publishing them on the Web sites AfterWalkerEvans.com
and AfterSherrieLevine.com - virtual galleries designed to facilitate
the dissemination of these images as part of a commentary on how we
arrive at information in this burgeoning digital age.
On AfterWalkerEvans.com you will find a browsable selection of these
images, links to the high-resolution exhibition-quality images
available for download and print-out, along with a certificate of
authenticity for each image (that you print out and sign yourself)
and, finally, directions on how to frame the image so that it will
fulfill the requirements of the certificate.
By making the image's URL its title - with titles such as "Untitled
(AfterWalkerEvans.com/1.jpg)" - the images can be easily located and
downloaded by anyone. By distributing the images online with
certificates of authenticity, the images can be owned by anyone.
Unlike the work of the late Felix Gonzalez-Torres - known for his
spills of candy and stacks of paper from which the viewer can take a
piece - Mandiberg's certificates are used to insure that each
satellite image be considered equally authentic. In the work of
Gonzalez-Torres the sole certificate of authenticity, and thus, the
right to reproduce the work, is sold like a traditional art object.
Mandiberg's work assumes an explicit strategy to create a physical
object with cultural value, but little or no economic value.
Michael Mandiberg is a conceptual artist who uses the net to explore
issues surrounding commerce, labor, and language. His ongoing
project Shop Mandiberg is a fully functional e-commerce web site that
markets and sells every last one of his personal possessions. Shop
Mandiberg (http://www.Mandiberg.com) has received 80,000 hits, and
sold over 60 of his possessions to date. His work has been written
about by the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Berliner
Zeitung, Artbyte.com, Eyestorm.com, among others. His work is
currently included in Net.Ephemera, curated by Mark Tribe at the
Moving Image Gallery in New York.

Dear CTHEORY readers,
We have just published on CTHEORY'S web site (www.ctheory.com) a
series of articles and interviews devoted to a critical exploration
of the Human Genome Project. This will be followed in early June by a
special multimedia presentation of Tech Flesh by some really amazing
new media artists, all of whom work to unconceal the uncertainty
field of the gene.
Here's the formal announcement:
The triumph of biotechnology as the key emergent tendency of the 21st
century indicates that we may be entering a final phase of
technology--harvesting human flesh. Breeding virtual bodies better
suited to the vectors and virtualities of post-biological life.
Widely hyped as a "bible of life" and a "map" to the future of human
evolution, the Human Genome Project throws into sharp ethical relief
critical social issues raised by this newest phase in eugenic
experimentation. Simultaneously speaking in terms of the language of
facilitation (post-genetics as about the eradication of disease and
the extension of the human life span) and the language of control
(genetic sequencing as the latest pharmaceutical version of the
social hygiene movement), the Human Genome Project with its vision of
pure genes and designer biology raises again the specter of
scientific hubris and the silent political interests of a potential
genetic superclass.
With the collaboration of Eugene Thacker (Rutgers University/Georgia
Tech), this issue of CTHEORY is devoted to a diversity of critical
perspectives on the promise and perils of the Human Genome Project.
Here, artists, writers and theorists provide an alternative, critical
vision of the genome and its infotech ideology.
We are grateful for the active and generous support of Boston
College, particularly the Department of Sociology and its Chair,
Professor Stephen Pfohl, in developing this issue, and we very much
appreciate the technical assistance of Jeffrey Wells and Carl
Steadman.
In June, 2001, the multimedia version of Tech Flesh
(http://ctheorymultimedia.cornell.edu), curated by Arthur and
Marilouise Kroker and Timothy Murray, will be published and hosted by
Cornell University's Electronic Publishing Program.

What is VAC-UP?
VAC-UP stands for "Virtual Aesthetic Curriculum User
Program." It is a PROformance designed by artofficial
construction media that attempts to address in both
pragmatic and symbolic ways problematic aspects of
aesthetic training in institutions of higher
education, such as job placement.
What is "problematic" about the "aesthetic training in
institutions of higher learning"?
Well, acm believes that there are many aspects of the
education process that are problematic for aspiring
cultural producers. There has also been some
discussion of such problems in various other forums
that suggests that it is not just us complaining. Some
of the aspects we would like to address are: the
contradictions in the inverted relationship between
rising educational costs and decreases in "real" work
opportunities; the small number of jobs available
compared to the large amount of recruiting; the
justification of these trends with neo-social
Darwinism (the survival of the fittest) coupled with
blatant social engineering.
Does VAC-UP offer solutions, or just complain?
VAC-UP is, of course, not an entity in the individual
sense of the word. VAC-UP cannot offer solutions, per
se, but is rather designed to aid in the development
of possible solutions through an opening up of
discourse about education. So, from acm's perspective,
this is part of a solution, but we would caution that
any interpretation of both problems and solutions
include their political economy.
What does ACM mean by "PROformance"?
acm's use of the term "PROformance" is meant to
suggest the connection between VAC-UP as a cultural
product, and VAC-UP as a professional endeavor by ACM
as educational practitioners. The performance method
of VAC-UP does not preclude the affect of such actions
beyond "the stage" so to speak. This is merely a
continuation of established ideas about art, critical
theory, and specificity (Joseph Kosuth, etc..)coupled
with recent developments in contemporary aesthetics
(Andrea Fraser,
etc...)and education.
Can ACM put these words into action?
Yes and no. ACM is committed to the goals set forth in
VAC-UP and ACM members will do what they can to
institute VAC-UP concepts in their own professional
lives. ACM is also actively pursuing the
implementation of VAC-UP as a collaborative venture,
and will work with institutions and organizations in
just about any capacity willing to take VAC-UP or
similar programs on.

CALL FOR PANEL ON THEORY AND EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
TASMANIA CONFERENCE, 'WHAT'S LEFT OF THEORY?' (details of conference
below this call).
I am seeking abstracts for papers to be included on a panel on 'Critical
Theory and Experimental Music'.
Recent experimental music, especially in the electronic domain, has of
late shown itself to be theoretically informed. Artists such as DJ
Spooky can regularly be heard citing various texts from the Critical
Theory canon, and the number of labels or various artists compilations
themed around the works of Theorists and Philosophers is ever increasing
(cf "In memoriam Gilles Deleuze", the label Mille plateaux and its
offshoot Ritornell to name but a few).
Papers are sought which investigate this intersection between
experimental music and critical theory.
Questions to be addressed might include but are not restricted to:
- --How does theory inform music and what kind of music does this produce?
Does such music differ substantially in its intentionality?
- --How are the ideas of various philosophers and theorists translated
into a musical vocabulary?
- --Do works that attempt to express in music the musical ideas contained
in the written texts of various philosophers convey the sense of the
latter sense more faithfully than the original?
- --To what extent does theoretically-informed music inform or transform
theory?
- --How do we read music theoretically?
Submissions should also take into account the general theme of the
conference (details below).

"What's Left of Theory?"

Keynote Speaker: Fredric Jameson
Fredric Jameson once said, we can't really know what a thing is until it
has become something else. It might therefore be said that theory's truth
will only be available to us when it has ceased to be. Which prompts the
question: is theory still alive and well, or has it indeed mutated into
something else? If it has vanished did it leave a trace? Is it its
successor stained with its legacy? But just as importantly, we can perhaps
now, for the first time, determine what theory really is/was.
Fredric Jameson also said that in his opinion, theory itself is a product
of a leftist impulse in critical thinking. Thus despite all the criticism
that has been heaped on theory's progenitor structuralism for its
apolitical approach to analysis, it was in Jameson's view at least, born
of Marxist modes of thinking. This gives our question above quite a
different spin: is theory a leftist enterprise? Or perhaps we should ask,
was it a leftist enterprise? And if it was, is its successor still
leftist? Or has there been a swerve to the right in critical thinking to
go along with the movement beyond theory?
Papers are called for that address these questions in an interdisciplinary
fashion. The Deadline for abstracts is July 20 2001.

Theme of the Summer 2001 CyberForum
"Lost Worlds of the Internet: Stalking the Ruins of Virtual Reality"
Nearly a decade ago, in the first rush of enthusiasm for Virtual Reality,
hundreds of 3D worlds were launched on the Internet. As commercial
exploitation began to dominate the Web, public attention never
quite reached these islands of 3D experimentation - some of which are
unremarkable and some of which are exquisite gems of low-bandwidth VR.
These virtual art works fell into obscurity even their authors abandoned
them for Web commerce and mainstream activities.
The Summer 2001 CyberForum will conduct biweekly expeditions into
these "lost worlds of the Internet." We will put on avatars and visit these
worlds in real time as we chat with the author-artists who conceived them
and with critics who are interested in the 3D Web.

Das III. internationale Kurzfilmfestival g-niale findet vom 16.-19.
August 2001 im Rahmen des Festivals garage in Stralsund statt.
Veranstalter der g-niale sind garage und Filmclub Blendwerk e.V.
Thema 2001 ist �zwischen Bild und Ton". Dabei soll es um eine bewu�te
filmische Auseinandersetzung mit Wahrnehmung von Einzelmedien und
ihrer Durchmischung gehen, soll das Sehen und das H�ren thematisiert
werden - ob durch Betonung oder konsequentes Weglassen eines der
beiden Elemente. Gesucht sind Formen der Beziehung zwischen
akustischer und visueller Ebene. Wirkungen, Funktionen, Vermittlung
und Darstellung, Ger�usche und Geschichten - was geschieht zwischen
Bild und Ton?
Studenten von Film- und Kunsthochschulen sowie Filmschaffende aller
Sparten sind eingeladen, Kurzfilmbeitr�ge neuerer Produktion bis max.
20 min L�nge einzureichen. Beschr�nkungen hinsichtlich des Genres
gibt es nicht. Die vorjurierten Arbeiten werden dem Publikum
pr�sentiert, welches am Ende des Festivals �ber ein Stimmverfahren

The 3rd international short film festival "g-niale" will run from
August 16th to 19th, 2001 and is part of the "garage" festival in
Stralsund. Organizers of the "g-niale" are garage and Filmclub
Blendwerk e.V.
The topic of 2001 is: �between image and sound" as a conscious
discussion of perception of individual media and its interaction with
film and beyond. Thereby illustrating seeing and hearing in a wider
sense - by emphasizing or consistent dropping of one of the two
elements. Looking for forms of relations between the acoustic and the
visual level. Impacts, functions, mediation and presentation,
noise and story-telling - what happens between sound and image?
Students of film and art schools and professional filmmakers of all
genres are invited to send their newly produced short films (max. 20
minutes) to the festival. No restrictions apply to the genre of
submitted works. The preselected films will be presented to an
audience which, at the end of the festival, will choose the three
winners. The festival prize is worth 2.000 DM. Additionally, the
special prize of the jury will be awarded. Deadline will be June 2001.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
Unter dem Motto "Movement is our Right" fordern Fl�chtlinge aus dem gesamten
Bundesgebiet die Abschaffung der Residenzpflicht. Um dieses Menschenrecht
�ffentlich einzuklagen, finden vom 17. bis 19. Mai auf dem Schlossplatz in
Berlin-Mitte die Aktionstage gegen die Residenzpflicht statt.
Der Schossplatz wurde aufgrund der zentralen Lage gew�hlt, au�erdem bietet
er den Fl�chtlingen die M�glichkeit ihren Protest sichtbar zu machen.
Fl�chtlingsunterk�nfte sind in der Regel abgelegen oder mitten im Wald, so
dass die BewohnerInnen gezwungen sind isoliert zu leben. Die Residenzpflicht
verbietet Fl�chtlingen den Landkreis, indem ihre Unterkunft liegt, ohne
Erlaubnis zu verlassen. Dadurch wird ihnen das Menschenrecht auf
Bewegungsfreiheit genommen. Auf diese Weise kann die Ausl�nderbeh�rde jeden
Schritt der Fl�chtlinge �berwachen. Den Fl�chtlingen wird jegliche
Privatsph�re genommen.
Von Donnerstag bis Samstag ist der Schlossplatz rund um die Uhr zentraler
Veranstaltungsort. Am Donnerstag �bergibt eine Fl�chtlingsdelegation ein
Memorandum zur Abschaffung der Residenzpflicht an den Bundestag. Im
Anschluss daran findet zwischen 11.00 und 13.00 Uhr am Pariser Platz eine
Kundgebung statt. Am Samstag beginnt um 12.OO Uhr am Alexanderplatz die
bundesweite Demonstration gegen die Residenzpflicht. Auf dem Schlossplatz
finden Podiumsdiskussionen und workshops statt. Am Donnerstag und Freitag
Abend sind Filme und Konzerte geplant.
Aus diesem Anlass laden wir Sie am Dienstag, den 15.05.2001, zu einer
Pressekonferenz um 11.00 Uhr ins Haus der Demokratie und Menschenrechte,
Greifswalder Str. 4, in Prenzlauer Berg ein.

The Center for Digital Discourse and Culture (CDDC) in the College of Arts
and Sciences at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is
accepting new manuscripts for digital modes of publication in its Research
E-ditions series. The CDDC ( http://www.cddc.vt.edu ) has been in operation
for over two years, and it publishes hypertext journals, hosts digital
research archives, and cooperates with many international cyberculture
organizations. You can find examples of our Research E-ditions at
http://www.cddc.vt.edu/editions.html .
As an entirely digital point-of-publication, the CDDC will review and then
produce professional academic research works--either single-authored or
edited collections--in a digital format. Proposals could take the form of
an "e-book" that simply makes available a scholarly monograph in online
format, or a collection of academic papers organized around a central
theme, or a fully hypertextual experiment with new forms of digital
discourse. Proposals could also be made for hosting or mirroring material
that you have on your site or for community building or teaching resources
like bibliographies or discussion systems for your specific community.
Arrangements can be made for "print on demand" (POD) paper versions of
these works, but the main focus of the CDDC is to explore the new
communicative potentials of hypertext, hypermedia, and web-centered
publication. The review processes will be as extensive and rigorous as
those experienced in print academic communication, but it too will be
conducted in a fully on-line format.
All topics are potentially of interest in the Research E-ditions series,
however, we are particularly interested in manuscripts, digital archives,
and hypertexts from the humanities and social sciences relating to the
areas of cyberculture, social theory, literary studies, digital art, and
cultural studies. In addition, the CDDC is committed to Proposals from
applied and natural sciences that relate directly to the fields of
bioinformatics, energy and environmental studies, and information
technology and communications.
