[Nettime-bold] A view from Pakistan |
I also think that there is a distinction between Palestinian suicide bombers in Israel and highly organized, well endowed Osama's terrorist network. Making money by selling short stocks of the industries that would lose due to his targeted suicide bombing attack, lifts all the 'rubbish of the humanity, abandoned by civilization' justification from him. Afghanistan might be abandoned by civilization. Osama abandoned civilization, he was well born into it, but he decided to make a business of creating rubbish from humanity. Here is another view from Pakistan - and their real dissatisfaction with the U.S.: http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2001/9/17/182705.shtml ivo Date sent: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 14:46:39 -0400 (EDT) From: Andras Riedlmayer <[email protected]> To: Ivo Skoric <[email protected]> Subject: Re: The view from Pakistan/Pervez Hoodbhoy Below, an excerpt from the latest of the 1000s of commentaries on last week's horrors, "The View From Islamabad," by Pervez Hoodbhoy. The full article is available on Z Magazine's website at http://www.zmag.org/hoodcalam.htm I must say I find myself unconvinced by the "wretched-of-the-Earth" rhetoric presented here. The WTC hijackers identified and profiled in the media thus far have all come from comfortable, even privileged backgrounds -- not one of them appears to be the product of what the writer calls the "rubbish dumps of humanity, abandoned by civilization and left to rot" ... I suspect that, despite all the facile talk about the revolt of the hopeless underclass striking back at its tormentors, what we're really seeing is a Middle Eastern/"Islamic" version of the sick romanticism that fuelled the radical Left bombers in America and Western Europe in the 1960s and early 70s -- not one of whom had anything in common with the oppressed workers and third-world peasants they claimed to champion.
