Yes,

 I recently had this. Though perhaps not so negative an experience as yours. Really nice islamic
malays, charming buddist chinese and warm hindu indians discussing recent world developments and 
criticising the paranoia of the North American National Security State. Being Scottish/British with Canadianleanings or affinities I had to try to explain the mindset of the descendents of the Vikings to a diverse group of people from New Caledonia to Nairobi, from Taiwan to Equador in the smoke room of The Celebrity Inn, Canada Immigration Detention Centre, Airport Road, Toronto for five weeks. 

Everyone got along really well and were unanimous
in their condemnation of a continent where all 
agreed one 'had to put your brain in the washing machine' to assimilate oneself culturally, intellectually and emotionally to the prevailing trends and tendencies of north american culture, politics and intellectual life. They were sure however that, eventually, America would grow up.


North American culture and civilisation? That, to paraphrase Ghandi, would be a good idea.
