<The Shape of Nets to Come>

//// The Cybersalon/ NMK Christmas lecture /////

Tues 18 december 2001

8pm- 1am

<content>
Discussion 8.00 - 9.30pm
Is the internet able to transform society, increase freedom and
provide unlimited business opportunities? Is this Utopian hype?

The Annual New Media Knowledge Christmas Lecture is given by Dr
Richard Barbrook- co founder of Cybersalon. Dr Barbrook will examine
the history of the internet, its current value as a medium and how it
will continue to grow and affect culture, business and society.
He will give a hard-hitting and critical analysis of how new media
has developed over the last few years, and will take on
the 'Californian utopians' and the 'English miserablists', arguing
that the industry has been cursed by both exuberant optimism and
irrational pessimism.

Chaired by Sean Dodson- writer, Guardian Online
