SHOBOSHOBO 08# GO AUSTRALIA GO EDITION PATERAS/BAXTER/BROWN (australie) SECTION AMOUR (france) NATASHA ANDERSON (australie) WILL GUTHRIE (australie) JEUDI 30 SEPTEMBRE 2004 20H30 / 5? STUDIO 14 PARADIS 14, RUE PARADIS METRO GARE DE L'EST PATERAS/BAXTER/BROWN (australie) Formed in mid-2002 in Melbourne by Anthony Pateras (prepared piano/electronics), Sean Baxter (percussion), and David Brown (guitar/electronics), the Trio was inspired by a shared desire to explore extreme forms of extended technique on conventional acoustic instruments in an improvised context. Pateras/Baxter/Brown play acoustic, freely improvised music, utilising various compositional devices to create fluid and dynamic structures and sound. The cornerstone of the group sound is the use of "preparation"--a process of manipulating familiar acoustic sounds by introducing foreign objects directly onto and/or into the sound boards and sound producing components of conventional instruments. Through the use of preparation, the group has at its disposal a shared set of sonic possibilities, where it often becomes ambiguous as to what instrument, or which performer, is producing the particular sounds that the listener hears. The Trio has developed a solid improvising language in which all players are simultaneously aware of the logic a given performance has taken and are free to develop that logic in practically any direction. This internal language is given even greater depth by the allusion to numerous traditions of percussive-based contemporary and traditional music, including contemporary classical chamber music, rarefied improvisation and non-western percussive traditions such as gamelan. Pateras/Baxter/Brown perform regularly in Australia and at numerous high profile experimental music events including: Impermanent Audio in Melbourne in May 2003, the NOWnow festival in Sydney in January 2004, and at the Make It Now Festival of Improvised music in Melbourne in February 2004. They have released a CD on Synaesthesia called Ataxia (SYN009) which is now receiving rave reviews from both electronic and printed press internationally. Since completing her music studies at the Amsterdam Conservatorium and with a masters in performance studies, she has performed and devised works in the genres of improvisation, electro-acoustic composition and performance/installation, presenting a wide range of music in Europe, Japan, New Zealand and around Australia. Currently influenced by the work of visual artists Hannah Wilke, Helen Chadwick and Cindy Sherman, Natasha is interested in exploring how the framing of identity and embodiment may be articulated and read within performances that combine the aural with the visual. Rejecting any idea of essentialism, Natasha plays with an (often awkward) juxtaposition of dualities -- corporeal/instrumental, corporeal or instrumental/digital, acoustic/processed (Max/MSP), improvisation/composition and surface/interior as well as employing extreme frequencies and dynamics. http://www.ausland-berlin.de/offen/viewEventEntry.do?blog:blogid=2443 WILL GUTHRIE (australie) Will Guthrie est un percussionniste Australien qui utilise des instruments qu'il construit lui-mme, des objets trouvs qu'il amplifie ainsi que les plus conventionnels toms et cymbales.
