Le fabuleux deuxiÃme opus du Festival international du film de rÃsistance culturelle du Liban vient de se conclure. Maintenant, la cinÃaste, directrice fondatrice et commissaire du festival, Jocelyne Saab, revient pour quelque temps à Paris. Un sÃminaire en sa prÃsence lui est consacrà ces jours-ci, à la fondation Maisons des Sciences de lâHomme. The second opus of the Cultural Resistance International Film of Lebanon curated by Nicole Brenez is just closed. Yet now Jocelyne Saab the filmaker, founder Director and curator of the Festival, is coming back in Paris. A dedicated seminar will take place in her presence next week. En 1973, aprÃs avoir travaillà à la tÃlÃvision libanaise, elle devient reporter de guerre au Moyen-Orient, en couvrant la guerre dâOctobre pour le magazine 52 sur la 3à chaÃne franÃaise. En 1975, Jocelyne Saab produit et dirige son premier long-mÃtrage documentaire, Le Liban dans la tourmente. AprÃs avoir rÃalisà de nombreux documentaires et reportages en Ãgypte, au Sahara Occidental, au Kurdistan irakien, en Iran, en Syrie, au Vietnam... et avoir couvert la guerre dans son pays au jour le jour pendant quinze ans, elle rÃalise Beyrouth ma ville en 1982, quâelle considÃre comme son film le plus important. Assistante de rÃalisation pour Volker SchlÃndorff sur Le Faussaire en 1981, elle dÃveloppe parallÃlement une veine de fiction, aussi ancrÃe dans la rÃalità que ses documentaires sont structurÃs par la poÃsie civile, notamment grÃce à ses collaborations avec Etel Adnan et Roger Assaf. En 1985, elle co-produit et rÃalise son premier long-mÃtrage de fiction, LâAdolescente sucre dâamour / Une vie suspendue, avec Juliet Berto et Jacques Weber, puis en 1994, Il Ãtait une fois... Beyrouth. Une fable cinÃphile sur la mÃmoire visuelle dâune ville en ruine : Histoire dâune star. En 2005, elle tourne Dunia en Ãgypte. En 2007 elle rÃalise sa premiÃre installation, Strange Games and Bridges, sur 22 Ãcrans, avec pour matÃriau son travail sur la guerre, pour le National Museum de Singapour. La mÃme annÃe, elle expose ses photographies à la Dubai Art Fair. En 2009 elle termine un nouveau long mÃtrage Whatâs going on ? tournà dans sa ville natale. Jocelyne Saab vit aujourdâhui entre Beyrouth, Le Caire et Paris. She started her career hosting a pop music program on the national Lebanese radio called Marsupilami has got blue eyes, and from there moved on to become a news anchor on television. Civil war in Lebanon threw her onto the front line, in the field as a war reporter. Le Liban Dans La Tourmente in 1975 was her first long documentary. From that point forward, she covered war in the Middle east and Iran, as well as the Polisario war in the Maghreb. Her independent films received numerous international prizes. In 1982, covering the Israeli invasion of Lebanon attains her many prizes for her film Beirut My City. Later going to South east Asia, to post-war Vietnam specifically, she took the portrait of the Lady of Saigon- Dr Hoa, for which she won the best French documentary prize. In 1981 she landed the job of second unit director on Volker Schlondorffâs movie about the Lebanese civil war, Circle of Deceit. In 1985 her first feature film Suspended Life shot in the middle of Beirut and the civil war selected for the 1985 Cannes Film Festival. In 1991 she directed Once Upon A time in Beirut, dedicated to the anniversary of the century of the cinema and the founding of the Lebanese cinematheque. She commutes between Beirut, Paris and Cairo and has added installation and photographs, to her involvement in film work.
