Re: <nettime> the logfile conspiracy |
'gw' usually a name chosen by sysadm to mean 'gateway'. This might be a gateway between a couple of connected networks, or even the internet gateway of a network. users may appear to be coming 'from' these gateways because they are using 'address translation' software to hide internal addresses, for security reasons and also because often the internal addresses used aren't globally reachable (ie. they use specially reserved network addresses internally because the IP space is nearly fully utilised and all workstations cannot be assigned their own unique IP address). regs scot. # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: [email protected] and "info nettime-l" in the msg body # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: [email protected]
