<nettime> mailing list monoculture in three easy steps


     [when did subscribing to a mailing list become an opt-*out*
      procedure? this kind of thing used to be pretty rare; now
      it's becoming all too familiar. whatever the 'intent'--if
      indeed intent can be ascribed to corporate bodies--the ef-
      fects are (a) to reduce individual mailing lists to robot-
      ic distribution vehicles, and (b) to homogenize diversity 
      across lists. unsurprisingly, the perpetrators are mostly
