NUEVA / VISTA Video Art from Latin America
Curated by Jose-Carlos Mariategui

http://www.ifa.de/a/a2/da2nueva.htm

NUEVA / VISTA presents in Germany an exhibition based in the increasing
number of local productions from the expanding video art scene in Latin
America.
The concept of this exhibition is to make a critical revision of todays
proposals on electronic arts made in Latin America taking a completely new
way to look at its creative processes by defining it in more global ways.
These means that this exhibition will not be seen as the exhibition of the
other, but as a way that will allow the public to do an analysis of their
reality in contrast to other realities using similar communicational
aesthetics and languages, but in different contexts.
In addition to the focus of NUEVA / VISTA on Peruvian video art, the
exhibition also introduces other interesting artists from South-America,
which also define their works in a more globalistic new view of the
21st-century Latin America.
The artists selected on this exhibition include: Angie Bonino, Ivn
Esquivel, Eduardo Villanes, Alvaro Zavala (Peru); Andrs Burbano (Colombia);
Ximena Cuevas (Mexico); Edgar Endress (Chile); Ktia Lund (Brazil) and
Gustavo Romano (Argentina).

The exhibition will take place at the ifa Galleries (Bonn, Berlin and
Stuttgart) starting on the 11 of September 2002 until 1st of June 2003.

lux ziffer #3
an anonymous award for those who feed or fight the digital dragon

internet-aktionen beunruhigend realistisch vortaeuschte.

lux ziffer #3
an anonymous award for those who feed or fight the digital dragon

the lux ziffer award was first assigned at transmediale.01. lux ziffer #1
went to Daniel Garcia Andujar for his CD-Rom Phoney TM, which in a
disquieting way pretends to unlawfully access private data and to execute
other illegal Internet actions .

now the prize, which is awarded by an anonymous person, is again presented
at transmediale.03: it implies a cash prize of 666 euro for projects which
pursue a 'cannibalistic, digital concept for the future'.

lux ziffer #3 addresses artists who do not subordinate themselves to an
apparent system of rules of the digital universe, but feel provoked to
circumvent, to break, to reinterpret or to subvert these rules in a
skillful and creative manner.

An exhibition on control of our minds.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Control of our minds becomes ever more repressive.
Government organs, business corporations, politicians and interest groups all
seek to control public opinion via the media. Public opinion is the title of
this exhibition in which we try to describe how public discussion is formed.
The various works included treat such questions as the extent to which the
media fulfill their task as transparent sources of information and opinion and
the space given to the individual in forming her or his own opinion.

Electronic Art in Public Spaces
                                          - conference October 6 - 9, 2002

What is electronic art and how can it be used in public spaces?

The conference offers various perspectives on electronic art, providing an
overview of artistic, design and coordination considerations when working with
public space.

The program will delve into all aspects of the processes involved - from artist
idea to maintaining the finished work. Artists from the electronic art milieu
will share their ideas and thoughts about their field, and conference
participants will be introduced to the broad range of creative solutions that
such works and installations offer. In order to provide a context for this
broad presentation of projects, the conference will also examine the concept
and status of the field of electronic art from several theoretical
perspectives.

The in-depth program reflects the interests of many professions, including
architects, developers, politicians, clients, artists, curators and
theoreticians.

A large number of nationally and internationally acclaimed electronic artworks
that have been installed in public spaces will be presented. Seeing and
experiencing works and production studios first hand will allow participants to
become familiar with the potential of this exciting art genre, as well as with
the artists and concepts that lie behind it.

Topics will include:
- - defining the public space, past and present, as a venue for art
- - electronic art as a contemporary art form
- - characteristics of electronic art media (light, sound, text)
- - electronic art as a cross-disciplinary practice
- - the respective views of artist, contractor, client and architect
- - practical considerations for electronic art installations
- - requirements for solid technical solutions, quality and maintenance
- - production capabilities for electronic art: funding and workshops in Norway

The conference will be thoroughly documented, and a collection of texts and
images will be published after the conference.

Social Fiction.=20

=20

Social Fiction describes Generative Psychogeography as "an open source =
concept which describes a method to explore the urban environment. It is =
as simple as this: stroll through the city on directions like 'first =
street left, second street right, first street right, repeat'. The =
simplicity of this route can be deceptive, it turns out that the route =
which you will take is difficult to predict for more than 3 turns (in an =
asymmetrical city, that is). Add to this that by strolling like this you =
pass through the city in a way which is so thoroughly alien to the way =
you normally use the city that you find yourself confronted with the =
city in new light."

=20

Come and Drift with Special Airplane:

=20

We'll meet on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery, where you'll be =
given a slip of paper with an algorithm that will take you in a pattern =
around the streets. We'll walk for one hour starting at 6 pm. You'll be =
asked to chart your route on a map.=20

=20

If your pattern takes you to a point where you are faced with the ocean =
and cannot progress further, you will be asked to toss an object, which =
you will have been given ahead of time, into the sea.

After 1 hour, stop walking and come join the rest of the group to have a =

MICHELLE TERAN / JEFF MANN: TELEMATICA

automatische wijnschenker.

fourteen guests with robotics. At the dinner table robotic gadgets were
introduced like a speaking fish, a glass ticker for the speeches and an
automatic wine pourer. Also, these gadgets were introduced simultaneously
in Amsterdam and Toronto.

Teran and Mann will show documentation of the project in the Killerclub,
and discuss their experiences in stageing live situations with performance
interaction and their experiments with networked media and kinetic art.

In the coming year Michelle Teran is artist in residence at Waag Society.
She is a Canadian multimedia artist who's interested in the combination of
live and on line performances with audience participation. In recent years
she participated in several experimental performances in which KeyStroke
was being used, in traditional settings as well as in clubsettings with on
line jamming.
Michelle Teran will work in close cooperation with the KeyStroke team as a
performer, user/betatester and author of the manual of KeyStroke. Together
with Jeff Mann she researches applications that make use of sensors and
robots for KeyStroke in the Sensing/KeyStroke lab of STEIM.
