<nettime> samuel huntington + clashing cultures

a statement from huntington when he was on the US
council for foreign relations helps identify the
"clash of cultures" on the homefront:

"Some of the problems of democracy today stem from an
excess of democracy... The effective operation of a
democratic system usually requires some measure of
apathy and non-involvement on the part of some
individuals and groups."

One scary aspect of this is the repetition of this
ideology in "benign" quarters like the US Public Parks
and Recreation Services, that have large educational
components. An "educational" pamphlet for the
Roosevelt Timucuan Preserve in N.Florida, speaking of
the forced extinction of the Timucuan (erroneous name
aside) cultures says "In a clash of cultures, one must
ultimately be destroyed."

...right wing (media) activist groups like (neo
malthusian, pseudo-environmentalist) Project USA
http://www.projectusa.org don't seem so marginal
anymore.

The border issues are being taken up vigorously by the
right as well as the left it seems (not new i know).
i've seen media evidence of similar recent trends in
Europe, but what are some of the differences? and
significance in terms of cross cultural networking for
leftist, media-involved activists?

best,
ryan
