Kristol makes reference to the Pentagon dutifully recording this
interview, and then releasing the transcript -- it's at
http://www.defenselink.mil/transcripts/2003/tr20030509-
depsecdef0223.html if you feel like reading it yourself.

If you think this particular claim of misquotation is important enough,
the question to ask is this: Can either Tanenhaus or the DoD make the
actual audio available? I don't really trust a big glossy magazine to
get its facts straight (though at least we're talking about Vanity Fair
here, and not the New York Times) -- but I trust the DoD even less.

I wonder if it matters. I hate sounding like a despairing cynic, but
the signs of the White House's disregard for truth and transparency are
plentiful and not hard to find for anybody who takes the time to look.
If you're the sort of person who cares enough to read such an
interview, you're probably not going to have your opinion (positive or
negative) swayed either way.

as to the responses brian holmes' excellent set of questions, i will object
only in passing to the astounding historical dunderheadness of Mark Stahlman,
but ask what on earth we might learn by reading bill kristol spinmeister in
chief? nothing he says is worth ttwo plugged nickels.

I wish someone would bother to take up holmes's excellent questions in a
reasonable way. Most americans whom i know personally are terrified. And that
is not an exaggeration, although I am somewhere else right now.

What
Wolfowitz Really Said
>From the June 9, 2003 issue: The truth behind the Vanity Fair "scoop."
by William Kristol

AS THIS MAGAZINE goes to press, a controversy swirls about the head of
Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz.

Many here in the U.S. do not want see this for what it really is. Don't
for get every time Bush, or anyone else in the administration says
they have found "what they think may be evidence of WMDs people here
take it to mean they have! Polls show 41% believe we already have found
them. Any attacks on Bush about WMD is done for political reasons. Of
course in France you have growing anti-Semitism. How do you explain
that?
