doctor,

i don't know if you know that the white australia policy was initially set
up by organised labour in the early 20th century, and only rejected from
labour party policies in the 1950's. the "working mans paradise" was only
protected by keeping cheap "foreign" labour out - the motivation was
primarily economic, although there was a significant racist attitude

the free traders wanted to bring in "foreign" cheaper labour and in some
cases opposed the white australia policy - not through any sense of
morality, but out of mercantile greed as you might expect.
