Sorry to be the one to break it to you.. b ps - but it's not the *Republican's media propaganda machine* that did the hijacking... your propaganda machine is muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch bigger than that ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Oct 2004 11:08:39 -0700 From: ed phillips <[email protected]> Subject: Re: <nettime> Do You Still Own Your Reality? Randall, was this a troll? I guess I jumped at the bait. I would agree that a face of firm conviction is the strategy of Bush-Cheney and that Cheney's ability to tell a lie with complete conviction is impressive. It may even get them elected, what with a confused and bewildered electorate. It is a strategy, one that Kerry plays catch up to and in the attempt comes off as resolute-lite, only making Bush-Cheney seem like the real thing. Resolute to Kerry's resolute-lite. But, I would counter that should the Democrats get elected, there is a high probability that the commitment in Iraq will be escalated, in dollars and number of troops. The current desk jobbers at the pentagon, both appointed and lifer, know that this quagmire will keep them busy regardless of who gets elected. They don't call them quagmires for nothing. This administration has acted, they have "done something," which in a way has only brought into greater relief the impotence that a hyperpower experiences even as it dominates the globe as never before. Bush-Cheney assert that the Dems would have not done anything about Saddam, about the erosion of the sanctions into bribes, black market deals, etc. The window in which the lie of WMD could be used to "do something" about Iraq would have passed long before the Democrats acted. The pathos of Bush-Cheney if you would grant them that is that their "strong action" has led to greater impotence than sit and wait. (Abu Ghraib as display of impotent rage?). This power-impotence is in evidence across so many aspects of global capital. Even as advertising pervades life more and more, the advertising industry is in crisis, with firm after firm collapsing. Even as the large software companies dominate their markets, they experience crisis and are constantly on the edge of collapse.... The quagmire in Iraq and the intellectual crisis and deadlock we are in is here to stay regardless of which regime takes over the foreign policy apparatus of the U.S. All that said. I hope we throw the bum out and welcome in a new bum-lite. There is a point where discrepancy between teeveeality and reality causes a burst, public awakening and prompt crumbling and downfall of conmen in charge. That point has not being reached in US of A yet, and it's unlikely to happen in the next few months. The lowering of domestic standard of living is too slow for frogs to notice, and the bottom is still far below. In short, until hunger or death by iraq start affecting a nontrivial portion of voters the status quo seems safe. Just don't get depressed now, it could be worse. ===== end (of original message) Y-a*h*o-o (yes, they scan for this) spam follows: # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: [email protected] and "info nettime-l" in the msg body # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: [email protected]
