<nettime> RealSnailMail |
The world's only webmail service using snails - RealSnailMail: email delivered by snails. Or not delivered: there is not only no guarantee as to when the email will arrive in the recipient's inbox, but no guarantee that it will ever arrive. Researchers in Computer Art at Bournemouth University have devised a "slow art" project in order to make us think about the ubiquity of electronic communications and questions of speed, and, more broadly, question our thinking about communication. A small community of land snails Helix Aspersa are each equipped with a small glass capsule attached to its shell. The capsule contains a tiny chip and coil antenna that can be activated by a reader at a range of 3 cm. Purpose built readers that provide a link between the snails and the server allowing the snail to collect and deposit packets of information are in development http://www.boredomresearch.net/ http://www.realsnailmail.net/ # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: http://mail.kein.org/mailman/listinfo/nettime-l # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: [email protected]
