I'd be curious to hear how Haliburton/BlackWater fits in this
'monopoly' model.

Well, among other things, Halliburton has patented certain fracking
technologies -- although I have not explored the technical details, so
I can't say exactly how restrictive their patent may be on the overall
progress of fracking these days -- you can be sure that because they
are extensively licensing the process/technology, they would be in a
very handsome monopoly position. The big oil brotherhood is rather
small, so I suspect infringement would not be done on a wide scale, as
it would be easily 'found out'.

Interesting to note that initial fracking research was gov't funded...
