AMARC-EUROPE RADIO ACTION ALERT
URGENT ACTION REQUEST

RADIO 101.2 MINSK: FREQUENCY ALLOCATED TO STATE RADIO STATION

Following the closure of independent Radio 101.2 in Minsk, in August 1996,
the Belarussian authorities have decided to allocate their frequency to a
state youth radio station in Minsk. Last year the government ordered the
closure because they "were interfering with government frequencies".

The radio station has become popular because its programming and objective
reporting. According to Irina Kouropatkina from Radio 101.2 and the name of
the radio station has become synonymous with its frequency location. In
protest, staff at Radio 101.2 organised a demonstration and are determined
to fight for the future of the station, freedom of speech, pluralism and
democracy in the media.

AMARC-Europe requests that faxes of support should be sent to the President
of Belarus demanding:

A reversal of the recent decisions made by the government with regards to
the frequency previously occupied by Radio 101.2 FM

B7 for the government to recognise their decision is a violation of the
right to freedom of expression and take immediate steps to allocate another
frequency to Radio 101.2 .
