Subject: Forza

Not only in countries of former Yugoslavia is Tito now considered by 
his petty successors as a bad guy, but also the Italian fascists do 
not like him. Just recently, Forza Italia won the municipal 
government in Parma, Italy. Their first order of business was to 
remove statues erreceted to Karl Marx and Josip Broz Tito from one 
of the town's squares. Wow, I didn't even know that they had a statue 
of Tito in Parma! (from Corriere Della Serra, 11/11/98)

Subject: Law in Croatia

Please, check out Croatia's Civil and Process Law pages - 
http://public.srce.hr/gpp - English translations are available for a 
host of Croatian civil laws and proceedings (e.g. bankruptcy law). 
Despite the brilliant presentation, however, those laws were mostly 
written to be studied by students and placed on the Internet so that 
the world may see the Croatia cares about its legal system. In fact, 
if the laws would be enforced 40% of Croatian corporations would be 
declared bankrupt. For those who want to do business with Croatia, 
anyway, this page provides a link to a complete list of all lawyers 
in Croatia (with addresses and phone numbers), to get you what you 
want out of Croatian law (just a reminder: Croatian lawyers have the 
same taste in cars as American lawyers do: they like BMWs).

Subject: More on Croatian Legal System

Just as Pope came to beatify controversial Croatian cardinal Alojzije 
Stepinac, Dobroslav Paraga, the leader of right-wing Croatia's Party 
of Rights, accused Josip Manolic, a former high-ranking Tudjman's 
henchman, for having poisoned Stepinac. While this accusation is not 
completely without merit, given that Manolic, before becoming a big 
Croat and HDZ leader, was a communist secret police chief for Croatia 
for about 12 years under Tito and poisoning people would completely 
fall under his jurisdiction, now, of course, those things are hard to 
prove. Paraga's accusations may sound bizzare to a westerner, not 
acustomed to this type of talk among members of parliament, but in 
Croatia it is quite common: after all the HDZ spokesman of Croatian 
Parliament, Krpina,  just accused leader of social-democrats (Racan) 
of selling drugs (literally).  So, Paraga said in an interview to 
"Jutarnji List" that he is going to file a complaint in court against 
Manolic for Manolic's responsibility in poisoning of Stepinac. But he 
didn't file the complaint. Instead - Manolic sued him for libel. Now, 
in court, judge Borivoj Hersal asked Paraga to apologize to Manolic, 
but Paraga said that he has no reason and nobody to apologize to. 
Using a clever wordplay he plead both not guilty and no contest. That 
angered the judge who then used an expletive as a way to explain to 
Paraga what did he think of Paraga's regard for the court. Paraga's 
attorney promptly asked that judge be dismissed (prejudice against 
one of the parties). Now, the case is adjourned for the court 
president to decide on that request. Reportedly, however, after the 
adjournment, both parties (Manolic and Paraga), their attorneys, 
judge Hersak and a bunch of journalists (like in the U.S. where they 
spend way too much time covering things like O.J. and Monica 
Lewinsky, in Croatia they spend way too much time covering cases like 
this), went all together for a drink in the nearby caffe. Allegedly, 
the socializing part was very amicable, relaxed and in a good sense 
of humor. Go figure.

Subject: MTV - B92 - Kosava

This story confirms the awkwardness of the Serbian repressive 
apparatus. On November 13, Belgrade alternative radio station - B92 
(http://balkansnet.org/indie.html#b92) - received an award from 
British MTV for its struggles for human rights. B92 chief - Veran 
Matic - accepted "Free your mind" award on a ceremony in Milan. 
Veran, well nobody expected anything else from him, said while taking 
the award that he was dedicating it to all closed dailies and radio 
stations, kidnapped journalists and arrested students and their 
professors.

Now, so far, this is what we all feel comfortable with - because it 
is the usual stuff: B92 is the most known electronic media name 
related to the human rights struggle in the Balkans; therefore they 
get awards like that quite often. Veran, he never spares Serbian 
regime any criticism, and to everybody's utmost surprise, gets away 
with it time after time. MTV - being after all targeted to the techno 
raving crowd, needs to show support to similar media in less 
fortunate situation - and B92 is just that: it is an alternative rock 
/ techno profiled station based in the netherland of Serbia. There is 
no story here.

Enters Kosava. Kosava is a TV station owned by Mirjana Milosevic, the 
daughter of the Serbian/Yugoslavian supreme leader Slobodan 
Milosevic. For reasons that still escape my judgement, Kosava decided 
to air the award ceremony from Milan. Perhaps, Kosava did not expect 
that B92 would be the recipient, or that Veran would say what he did 
say. But as soon as B92 was announced as the winner, TV Kosava cut 
the program with a long block of advertisements, demonstrating all 
the un-subtle awkwardness of the anti-democratic forces in Serbia.
