Subject: Art Chat
From: "Igor Stepancic" <[email protected]>

Dear net art friends,

Pow project is installed on the following URL, www.blueprintit.com
(choose
POW section).
Project is open for all the artists who want to participate and produce
some
work for the site.

Pow project was presented at 48. Biennale di Venezia on "dAPERTutto" in
stanza di Oreste on the following dates: 19. and 20. June
On that ocasion an On Line Chat took place between 11am - 1 pm and 4pm -
6pm
European time (on both days).
Topics were: Communication in isolation, closed environment.
Subtopics are: 1) Ways and means of communication/ How one communicates
when
confined to closed and isolated environment. How does communication goes
within that environment and how it goes with outside world.
2) The content of such communication. What are the contents of such a
communication. Being in isolated environment and without usual means and
technical suport it is not complete. There is something missing, mistakes
are made and so on.
3) Estetics of such communication. Does it make sense. Can and should we
speak about estetics of such communications?

After the Biennial chat we deceided to continue with chat once a week. The
address is the same www.blueprintit.com. Suggested day for the chat is
Thursday, nights, so next will be held on Thursday, July 1st, starting at
18h CET. Idea is to create Art Chat Line. So We'll be waiting for you my
friends on the chat every Thursday.

It would be kind of you if you can advertise this chat by puting it on
your
site or sending information through your mailing list. Thank You.

Sincerely yours,

Igor Stepancic

BOOK RELEASE EATING BRAZIL EATING BRAZIL

Friday the 9th of July, in the LIVING ROOM at:
Ertskade 63, Amsterdam.
tel: 020-4193953.
Time: 18.00 hours.
Introduction by Harm Tilman.

Eat Brazil. That is the credo of this book. Do not try to understand its
culture, for that would be a little absurd. Do not try to comprehend its
economy or to grasp its order, for that is hopeless. There is only one way
to go. Eat Brazil up. Consume its landscape. Devour its cities. Make a
ceremony of it. Slice the masses into sacral pieces and invent ritual
sequences. Learn, as the Brazilians have learned, to digest this country
as
it is - sweet and promiscuous, crude and unapproachable, enormous and
endless. Accept the supremacy of the body sacrosanct. We Europeans must
summon up our courage and relinquish our resistance. This book offers its
help, in the form of a mental dinner.

Perspective
exhibition symposium screenings

The far-reaching consequence of the Renaissance discovery of linear
perspective
is a new image. Perspective creates a clear proportion between the
external
world (visual world) and the spectator/painter. Leon Battista Alberti's
window-analogy describes a real situation, and this revolutionary change
signifies a coherent world view.
The event series, including the exhibition, explores and presents this
half-millennium-long process, placing the subject of historical facts and
actuality into the force field of the present.

Subject: ann! ... newsbytes.com: Name.Space Seeks New Day in Court With
NSI

http://www.newsbytes.com/pubNews/132502.html

                      24 Jun 1999, 4:38 PM CST
                       By David McGuire, Newsbytes.
                       WASHINGTON, DC, U.S.A.,

New York-based domain name registrar Name.Space,
Inc. earlier this week filed an appeal of a court
ruling
that Network Solutions, Inc. (NSI) is immune from
antitrust prosecution because of its status as a
                        government contractor.

Southern District Court Judge Robert Patterson
ruled earlier this year that
Herndon, Va.-based NSI - which for many years
enjoyed a government-
                        sanctioned monopoly of the domain-name
registration
business - couldn't
be sued for antitrust because of its position as a
"Federal Instrumentality."
The ruling came in response to a case filed by
Name.Space in March
1997 that sought to break the NSI monopoly of
top-level Internet domain
                        name registration.

"NSI was only acting pursuant to a contract,"
Name.Space owner and
President Paul Garrin told Newsbytes. If NSI is
immune, "any government
contractor is immune and can act
anti-competitively," Garrin contends.

Name.Space registers Websites under such generic
domain names as
.space, .web, .art, and .sex and seeks to have
those and several hundred
other top-level domains added to the simple text
configuration file,
ROOT.ZONE, which is currently controlled by NSI.

As it stands, Internet users are forced to
reconfigure their computers if they
want to view Websites registered under domain
names
not recognized by
NSI. Name.Space has posted instructions on how to
make those changes
on its Website, located at http://namespace.org .

Name.Space's original suit also claimed that First
Amendment rights to
free speech should apply to Internet domains. If a
judge were to rule in
their favor on that point, the government would be
constitutionally
prohibited from restricting, or allowing an agent
of the government to
restrict, the introduction of new domains, Garrin
said.

Patterson's ruling likened Internet domains to
phone numbers, and
dismissed the notion that First Amendment
protections would apply to the
                        registration of Internet domains.

"Like the ocean, (Internet domains are) a global
resource," Garrin said.
Companies like NSI are "trying to brand domains."

NSI's essential monopoly over Internet domain
registration came to an
end earlier this month when the firm's first
official competitor,
Register.com, went live. Register.com is one of a
handful of companies
sanctioned by the Internet Corporation for
Assigned
Names and Numbers
(ICANN) to act as "test-bed registrants" of
Internet domains.

The government has charged ICANN, a not-for-profit
organization, with the
task of introducing competition into the
domain-name registration
                        business.

NSI has 30 days to respond to the Name.Space
appeal. NSI did not return
phone calls in time for this story.
