SOUTH 1 (1-4 July 2004)
Call for expressions of interest due 4 August

The South Project is designed to gather together the cultural energies of
the south. Southern nations like Australia have normally looked north for
creative stimulus. There has been relatively little exploration of the
potential cultural traffic across the southern latitudes, including the
nations of the Pacific, Africa and South America. The South Project is a
journey to find out what these cultures might share in common.

South 1 is the first in a series of three biennial events. It will serve as
a gathering point for artists who will participate in South 2, a series of
exhibitions planned to coincide with Melbourne's 2006 Commonwealth Games. In
2008, South 3 will present an overview of the south, involving a consortium
of Melbourne's arts organisations. South 1 is a critical first stage when
the partners in this exchange have the opportunity to meet together, share
hopes, canvas fears and build futures.

There seems much to share. Cultures of the south face the challenge of
developing a balance between the traditional and modern worlds. Towards this
end, artists have a special role in forging new symbols and recovering the
old. Points of intersection for artists of the south include use of
indigenous and alien materials, stories of human and animal migration, the
ocean, the stars, lost worlds and the meeting of western and tribal values.

South 1 provides a space for gathering the evolving indigenous and
traditional cultures of the south, including Australian Aboriginal, Maori,
Pacific Islander, Zulu, Xhosa and Khoi San artists. At the same time, it
seeks 'non-indigenous' participation, such as Pakehas, non-Aboriginal
Australians, white and Cape Malay Africans. While craft plays an important
role as a lingua franca between cultures, South 1 embraces the broader
cultural, theoretical and historical context for such exchange.

The 2004 conference will serve a number of purposes:
" Bring together diverse voices of the south
" Facilitate networks between individuals and organisations
" Share ideas about methods of collaboration between traditional and western
artists
" Profile the arts as a language of place
" Provide opportunities for artists in traditional contexts to develop
individual profiles

South 1 will include:
" Cultural encounters
" Keynote lectures and panels
" Workshops combining traditional and modern practices
" Hypotheticals on the kinds of interactions that the south might engage in
" Performances and stories of cultural phenomena unique to the south

South 1 will include a mix of theory and practice, reflecting both the ideas
and arguments at play in a focus on the south, as well as reflections of
lived experience by those at the intersection of modern and traditional
worlds. Satellite events are welcome.

South 1 will be at Sidney Myer Asia Centre, University of Melbourne 1-4 July
2004
