++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ FREE ASCII - INFO COURSE Politics of the Information Age ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Outline: This three part information evening and workshop course is intended to cover several key subjects. It shall give an overview of the ongoing struggle between those who would like to use information technology without constantly being subjected to the scrutiny of governments, corporations and other third parties not privy to their communication, and those who intend to use the technology available mainly to spy or eavesdrop on people for reasons of control over their lives or tracking of their behaviour. We want to raise the awareness of people in regards to the dangers that we face and might be facing in the near future, but also about the political implications and how to practicly deal with the situation. To do this we want to explain about, and teach practical skills needed to use cryptography and privacy software and how to look after yourself in the modern environment of digital control As a last topic, we want to address the political and organizational culture which fights this rising tide of digital control and oppression The three parts of this info course in detail: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part I State Control, Surveillance and Wiretapping ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In this first evening we want to mainly address the subject from the side of those who are the agents of control and oppression. We shall give an overview of the development in surveillance, eavesdropping, wiretapping and tracking of people. We will outline who the involved parties are, globally, on EU level and also specificly in the Netherlands To demonstrate how dangerously easy it is to compromise your privacy and your freedom through technological means availabled, we will show live examples of such practices. This course will be organized in the following way: - the historical and recent development of the subject - who does what and why? - the legal and political background -live demonstrations of internet wiretapping/sniffing Date: Tuesday April 1 2003 Time: 19:30 - 21:30 Location: ASCII - Kinkerstraat 92 (near the intersection Kinkerstraat - Bilderdijkstraat) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part II Defending Yourself ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the second part, we move on from a focus on what happens to a focus on what you can do to protect your rights for privacy, anonymity and freedom of communication. This will start with another explanation on the historical developments and an introduction of the most important players in this field. From there we move on to explain the technologies involved in cryptography and privacy software and give another set of practical examples on how to install and use programs which will help you to preserve your fundamental rights in the digital sphere. This evening's agenda will include - the history of cryptography and privacy - the technology involved and how it works - demonstrations and workshop course on using common methods to protect yourself against digital surveillance and tracking like gpg/pgp encryption, secure webbrowsing and secure chatting Date: Tuesday April 15 2003 Time: 19:30 - 21:30 Location: ASCII - Kinkerstraat 92 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part III Fighting Back _______________________________________________________________________________ In the last part we want to draw a picture of the political and organizational counterculture which has developed along with the rising tide of government and corporate control and oppression of our rights on and off the line by digital means. We want to introduce who the people are that take an effort to preserve the freedom of communication the internet promised in it's emerging days, and those who are watching the watchers. As an interactive feature, we intend to close the event with a question-and-answer round where we will try to give specific information of particular concerns. We will also invite people from the Dutch "Hacktivism" scene to provide a broader view than only we could give. The agenda for the final evening looks like this: - who is on our side and what are they doing? - different initiatives countering the mainstream - question-and-answer session & discussion with guests Date: Tuesday April 29 2003 Time: 19:30 - 21:30 Location: ASCII - Kinkerstraat 92 All courses are free of charge and open to the general public Police and intelligence personnel can stay in their offices, though, and request access to the eavesdropping logs from collegues later >;P ______________________________________________________ * Verspreid via nettime-nl.
