Op maandag 2 mei opent STEIM haar eigengereide geluidenkabinet met 
performances van Laetitia Sonami, Michel Waisvisz en F.X. Randomiz & 
Joseph Suchy

Laettitia Sonami
Laetitia Sonami is een componist, performer en geluidskunstenaar, die 
haar eigen instrumenten ontwerpt en bouwt. Haar lady’s glove, 
ontwikkeld door STEIM, geeft haar de mogelijkheid geluiden, mechanische 
instrumenten en licht te controleren in real-time. Sonami’s werk 
combineert tekst, muziek en ‘gevonden geluid’ in composities, die ook 
wel omschreven worden als performance novels. Met behulp van nieuwe 
technologie creëert ze intieme, spontane werken.

Michel Waisvisz
Als componist en performer van live elektronische muziek heeft Michel 
Waisvisz nieuwe wegen ontwikkeld om fysieke aanraking en beweging in 
relatie te brengen met elektronische muziekinstrumenten. Soms deed hij 
dit letterlijk door de elektriciteit in zijn zelfontwikkelde 
instrumenten aan te raken, waarbij hij een cognitief onderdeel van de 
machine werd. Waisvisz behoorde tot de eersten die synthesizers op het 
podium bespeelden en ontwikkelde vervolgens zijn eigen gestural 
controllers. Waisvisz’ eerste CD sinds 1978 komt zeer binnenkort uit op 
het Sonig label van Jan Werner, hetgeen de actualiteit van zijn muziek 
onderstreept. Michel Waisvisz’ experimenten met zelfontwikkelde 
instrumenten, waarin altijd contouren van songs en harmonieën te horen 
zijn tussen de met elkaar versmeltende noisy geluiden, zijn elk op 
zichzelf speciaal en verrassend.

F.X. Randomiz & Joseph Suchy
F.X. Randomiz produceert fascinerende en complexe kruisbestuivingen 
tussen experimentele pop en post-techno. Terwijl zijn naam uitsluitend 
op zijn eigen CD’s genoemd wordt, heeft hij ook belangrijke bijdragen 
geleverd aan CD’s van Holosud, Schlammpeitziger en Mouse on Mars. Felix 
"F.X." Randomiz creëert een synthetische maar ook organische eenheid 
van verschillende stijlen. De dichtheid en complexiteit van zijn muziek 
wordt gecombineerd met een experimentele benadering van pop, waardoor 
er een grooving landschap van onconventionele geluiden ontstaat.
Joseph Suchy is een veelzijdige gitarist en producer die zich bedient 
van een vocabulair dat vele stijlen uit de avant-garde bevat. Daar waar 
zijn vroege werk gekenmerkt wordt door schimmige lagen geluid, die zich 
ergens tussen elektronische muziek en free noise bewegen, neigt zijn 
recente werk naar een meer toegankelijke, schijnbaar geïmproviseerde 
stijl. Om een referentiepunt voor zijn muziek te vinden, vallen al snel 
de namen van Kaffe Matthews, Jim O’Rourke, Loren MazzaCane Connors, 
Fennesz, Oval en AMM.

On Monday May 2nd STEIM opens its idiosyncratic sound cabinet with 
performances of Laetitia Sonami, Michel Waisvisz and F.X. Randomix & 
Joseph Suchy

Laetitia Sonami
Laetitia Sonami is a composer, performer and sound installation artist 
who designs and builds her own instruments. Her lady's glove allows her 
to control sounds, mechanical devices, and lights in real-time. 
Laetitia Sonami’s work combines text, music and "found sound" from the 
world, in compositions which have been described as "performance 
novels". She is creating and utilizing some of the most sophisticated 
technologies in order to create an intimate, spontaneous art form which 
transcends technology.

Michel Waisvisz
Michel Waisvisz is a composer/performer of live electronic music, who 
has developed new ways to achieve physical touch with electronic music 
instruments. Sometimes this is done by literally touching the 
electricity inside the instruments and thereby becoming a thinking 
component of the machine. He was amongst the first to play with 
synthesizers on stage and very early developed and performed with 
gestural controllers. Waisvisz’ first CD since 1978 will be released 
shortly on the Sonig label of Jan Werner, which underlines the 
actuality of Waisvisz’ idiosyncratic sound world. Michel Waisvisz’ 
experiments with self-developed sound generators – in which one is 
always able to discern the outlines of songs and flashes of harmonies 
amid all noise which is morphing along – are each in themselves special 
and surprising.

F.X. Randomiz & Joseph Suchy
F.X. Randomiz has produced some of the most fascinatingly complex 
reshufflings of experimental pop and post-techno. And while his name 
typically only makes it onto his own releases, Felix "F.X." Randomiz 
has been a contributor to the electronica etchings of such artists as 
Holosud, Schlammpeitziger, and, most notably, Mouse on Mars. F.X. 
Randomiz blends elements of each of those projects into a highly 
synthetic, but exceptionally organic, vertical melange. The sheer 
density and complexity of his tracks combines experimental approaches 
with elements of pop to a melodic in itself grooving landscape of 
unconventional sounds.
Joseph Suchy is a multifaceted guitar player and producer, whose 
vocabulary comprises of many styles from the avantgarde. Where his 
earlier work can be described as shimmering layers of sound, somewhere 
between electronic music and free noise, his more recent work features 
a more accessible, seemingly improvised approach. In trying to find 
reference points for his music, the names of Kaffe Matthews, Jim 
O’Rourke, Loren MazzaCane Connors, Fennesz, Oval and AMM come to mind.
