SYNCHRONATOR - de workshop

Sinds 2005 heeft het Impakt Festival Utrecht een nieuw element aan zijn
activiteiten programma toegevoegd: Impakt Works.
Impakt Works richt zich op de productie van mediakunst door middel van
residencies, workshops en master classes.
In het kader van het 'Impakt Works' project SYNCHRONATOR, van Bas van
Koolwijk en Gert-Jan Prins, presenteert Impakt nu een driedaagse
workshop, gericht op het ontwikkelen van een AV performance.
Analoge en digitale technieken zullen worden toegepast om een
rechtstreekse interactie tussen beeld en geluid te creëren. De werkwijze
zal voornamelijk praktisch zijn. Doel is inzicht te krijgen in de
verschillende mogelijkheden om uiteindelijk tot een intuïtief
bespeelbaar instrumentarium te komen. Facetten als het gebruik van
interfaces, videotronics, video/audio software en improvisatie in de
elektronische muziek zullen daarbij belicht worden.

De eerste dag staat in het teken van video circuit bending en audio
toepassingen met vergelijkbare doe-het-zelf elektronica, o.l.v. Gert-Jan
Prins en Karl Klomp. We beginnen met enkele basisprincipes van de
elektronica. Er zal worden gekeken naar de eigenschappen van audio- en
videosignalen en hoe deze vervolgens te beïnvloeden.
Circuit bending is het eigenhandig modificeren van goedkope beeld en
geluid instrumenten. Zoals bijvoorbeeld het maken van nieuwe connecties
binnen de bestaande elektronische circuits van een videomixer, een radio
of een oude game console. Op deze manier kunnen apparaten omgevormd
worden tot audiovisuele ‘performative tools'.

Dag 2 richt zich op de digitale mogelijkheden. Audio- en video data
manipulatie met programma's als Max/MSP/Jitter, LiSa en junXion zullen
aan de orde komen. Ook weer met de nodige aandacht voor praktische
performance toepassingen. Zo kunnen meegebrachte joysticks en gamepads
goed van pas komen. Het is sterk aan te raden een eigen laptop mee te
nemen, voorkeur gaat uit naar Mac OSX. Robert van Heumen en Bas van
Koolwijk zijn uw instructeurs.

Op de derde dag onderzoeken we n.a.v. wensen en ideeën van de deelnemers
zelf enkele specifieke mogelijkheden voor nieuwe live toepassingen.

Since 2005 the Impakt Festival Utrecht has added a new element to its
program of activities: Impakt Works:
Impakt works aims to support the prodiction of media art by means of the
organization of residencies, workshops ans master classes.
As part of the 'Impakt Works' project SYNCHRONATOR, by Bas van Koolwijk
and Gert-Jan Prins, Impakt will now present a three-day workshop about
developing an AV performance.
Analogue and digital techniques will be examined to create a direct
interaction between picture and sound . The working method will be
mainly practical. Aim is to get an insight in the different
possibilities to eventually create an intuitively playable
instrumentation. Facets such as the use of interfaces, videotronics,
video/audio software and improvisation in electronic music will be examined.

The first day focuses on video circuit bending and audio applications
with similar DIY electronics with Gert-Jan Prins and Karl Klomp. We
start with some basic principles of electronics. We will examine the
properties of audio and video signals and how to influence these.
Circuit bending is the modification of cheap electronic devices. For
example making new connections within the existing electronic circuits
of a video mixer, a radio or an old game console. In this way apparatus
can be transformed to audiovisual performative tools.

Day Two aims for the digital possibilities. Audio and video data
manipulation with programmes such as Max/MSP/Jitter, LiSa and junXion
will be examined. Again with the necessary attention to practical
performance applications. Joysticks and gamepads you bring along can be
put to good use. It is strongly recommended to bring your own laptop,
preferably with Mac OSX. Robert van Heumen and Bas van Koolwijk are your
instructors.

On the third day we examine some specific possibilities for new live
applications following wishes and ideas of the participants. (More

Gert-Jan Prins has created an electronic system with circuits from
radio, TV and transmitter techniques, which produces feedback sounds and
TV signals. He cooperates regularly with E-RAX, The Flirts with Cor

Karl Klomp studies Interactive Media and Environments at the Frank Mohr
Institute in Groningen. His research focuses on live audiovisual
expressions and interfacing. He regularly performs with Tom Verbruggen
as mnk_toktek at Live Cinema events. www.karlklomp.nl

Robert van Heumen is managing director of STEIM, the only independent
live electronic music centre in the world that is exclusively dedicated
to the performing arts. He is also a member of the electro-acoustic

Bas van Koolwijk is a video and audio artist. His work analyzes the
disturbances produced by video, transforming them into numeric code, in
order to produce a visual and acoustic sequence in which sounds and
