Artur Zmijewski (1966) is among the most prominent figures of the  
current Polish art scene. Zmijewski works predominantly with video  
and photography. Observing human behaviour and unsettling any  
prevailing social and cultural consensus lie at the core of his  
documentary-style work. Unusual and surprising situations, usually  
provocatively induced by the artist himself, constitute the raw  
material for a body of work which blurs the divide between normal and  
abnormal, regulated and deregulated. In 80064, for instance, he  
renews the identification tattoo of an aged former prisoner of the  
Auschwitz concentration camp, or in Singing Lesson 2 deaf people  
interpret a cantata by Bach. The work of Zmijewski, in which sick  
people and the elderly, physically handicapped people, religious  
fanatics or naked soldiers take up a prominent position, the familiar  
is turned inside out. Because conventional ethics and morality are  
parenthesised in his work, since they do not lead to knowledge and  
insight, his work is perceived as controversial in some circles. . In  
itself this is not a bad thing. A conscience should be jolted every  
now and again.  The three-day retrospective at Argos comprises a  
selection of Zmijewski's most important videos and it is rather  
exceptional, since his work is usually presented within the context  
of an exhibition. Internationally, Zmijewski has exhibited widely  
over the last years. He represented Poland in the last Venice  
Biennial, and will be presenting new work at Documenta 12 in Kassel  
this summer.

Artur Zmijewski (1966) behoort tot een van de meest prominente  
figuren van de actuele Poolse kunstscène. Zmijewski werkt uitsluitend  
met video en fotografie. Het observeren van menselijk gedrag en het  
op losse schroeven zetten van wat geldt als maatschappelijke en  
culturele consensus vormen de kern van zijn qua structuur documentair  
aandoende werk. Ongewone en verrassende situaties, die de kunstenaar  
doorgaans zelf provocatief induceert, vormen de grondstof van een  
oeuvre dat de scheidslijn tussen normaal en abnormaal, geregeld en  
ontregeld doet vervagen. Zo vernieuwt hij in 80064 de  
identificatietatoeage van een bejaarde ex-gedetineerde van het  
vernietigingskamp Auschwitz of vertolken doven in Singing Lesson 2  
een Bachcantate. Het werk van Zmijewski, waarin zieken en ouderen,  
fysisch gehandicapten, religieuze fanatici of naakte soldaten een  
prominente plaats hebben, keert het vertrouwde binnenste buiten. Dat  
conventionele ethiek en moraliteit tussen parenthese worden geplaatst  
omdat ze niet leiden tot kennis en inzicht, maakt zijn werk in  
sommige kringen controversieel. Op zich geen slechte zaak. Het  
geweten mag nu eenmaal af en toe geschopt worden. De driedaagse  
retrospectieve omvat een selectie van Zmijewski’s belangrijkste  
video's en is eerder uitzonderlijk omdat zijn oeuvre meestal wordt  
vertoond in tentoonstellingscontexten. Internationaal stelde  
Zmijewski de laatste jaren uitgebreid tentoon. Hij vertegenwoordigde  
Polen op de laatste Biënnale van Venetië en presenteert nieuw werk op  
Documenta 12 in Kassel.
