Despite this, city and the citizens love to take-it-easy (intalliarsi). It is not just to be lazy, added with a hint of retro- anarchism and a bunch of hyper-bourgeoised egos.
Intallio is, nevertheless reality, to taste the better of life: slowly, romantically, sometime hungrily against whoever and whatever. Wherever ‘cause the volcanic over-population in a so narrow space.
Naples art scene bubbles with more than 7 superb art galleries, four main museums and houses of collectors and seems to be any artists’ most preferred city over centuries. Also many and usually non long- lasting independent projects come and go in the furious glam.
The first Naples pavilion ever recalled, is proud to welcome you more on the side of the independents and/or underground, because the curator – the Italian journalist and producer Diana Marrone - is hardly backing them with all her love and enthusiasms. Those independents are always ready to make fiesta with concepts, social issues, geo-referenced projects mixed with a constant practice on the ground and abroad.
Among photographers, artists and writers - plenty are the ones could embed the kingdom. This is just a glance in a rush: be curious to know it better. Every day of a year could charm you with Intallio in full bloom. [Intallio is a word from Neapolitan dialect].

When invited by Mediamatic to curate and produce the first Naples Pavilion at the first Amsterdam Biennale, the Italian journalist Diana Marrone immediately decided on the sense of her participation and consequently on what ask to the artists to select. The pavilion has to be focussed either on what Naples is now - despite all the worldwide gossips and rumours about the city and the citizens’ aptitudes – and on the most interesting underground voices Naples expresses.
Artists who have chosen to work on high and not banal poetics that are fully embracing the city with its angles and vertigos. Artists who do not close themselves in boundaries. Artists who love to investigate the limits of the Neapolitan life, without forgetting to dig the world, in search of those little quantities of peace the city itself is not able to fulfil.
All the selected artist, finally, have been requested to work on Intallio concept and to choose, together with the curator, an artwork able to answer to the expectations on the Pavilion theme and on the nature of the city at the same time. Yes, of course, the artwork has to be representative of their artistic languages, in order to present to the Dutch public some of the most interesting new trends in photography, film, performances, urban initiatives, visual arts made in Naples.
The architect and artist Danilo Capasso works on the visual expression of latency with a digital photo triptych and will perform an audiovisual set on October 10th from 18, at the opening of Naples Pavilion with a “best of” N.EST project, an online database and offline think-thank investigating on urban regeneration through the eyes of artists. N.EST project, started on 2004 by Danilo Capasso and some colleagues (included the Pavilion curator Diana Marrone, who is N.EST editor and fundraiser), will be part of the exhibit with a selection of video contributions and some images by the involved artists.
The Neapolitan-born and Milan based architect and photographer Alessandro Cimmino who is investigating the world landscape, will present a stunning image of his collection MAY-DAY, the #3, he dedicated to Naples: a long-exposure analogical photo made by the artist on the roofs of Naples on 2007 and printed on long-lasting paper able to be collected forever. As a scream of pain for the un- happy destiny of the city, the artist is willing to exaggerate the Naples proverbial negativity by post-producing the image and adding black on the windows of the portrayed houses: his last act to decree the death of the hopes.
As Cimmino uses black for its own sake of despair, the multimedia artist and composer Roberto Paci Dalò who have chosen Naples as his elective city as many artists do and did in the past centuries, loves to tell exactly the contrary with his full black in the movie Dust.
Realized during a very prolonged black-out happened in Italy on 27 Sept. 2003, Dust is the deep demonstration of how Naples can cause hate and love in very extreme tastes.
While hosted by the Neapolitan artist Oreste Zevola, Paci Dalò, feeling too alone in a big house at Corso Vittorio Emanuele (a long street cutting in half the main hill of the city), embraces his camera and wander out in the night - excited to penetrate an unusual soul of Naples, excited to breath the pure black and silent city. Acclaimed at 57th Locarno Film Festival, the movie will be screened into Naples Pavilion, for the first time in Amsterdam, during all days of the show.
Marco Zezza, Neapolitan artist, performer and screen designer born on 1974, who joined N.EST on 2005 and 2008 with two different interventions (both first offline and after online), will present Bordo a video made by subtle and beautiful pictorial interventions that are slowly animated, as in stop motion, by the artist. Bordo tells the history of a very shattered place, Via Brin, on East Naples, where many tourists and residents use to come and go, because there is an huge parking lot and bus station. The street is full of prostitutes and gays who seek for sex. The artist is depicting the physical and chemical reactions happening during sex in order to describe the actual Via Brin main mission: a post-industrial love district. He enjoy as well his deep theatrical aptitude in this artworks.
All the invited artists and also N.EST collective project will answer to 3 questions the curator Diana Marrone asked to them on Naples (their answers will be printed on the pavilion walls):
One over a million?, Two on 1000?, What is your preferite Intallio?Their answers, together with statements or books or info on their creations, will help the visitors to meet better the poetics of the artists and of the city itself.
The pavilion will contain also a number of copies of “Reconnecting Naples” a special newspaper on Naples originated by a joint research of Volume Magazine (Amsterdam); Domus Magazine (Milan, Italy); N.EST (www.napoliest.it ) managed and fundraised by Diana Marrone (who was also the editor at large), thanks to the commitment and the enthusiasm of Volume, with the editor in chief Arjen Oosterman, the director Lilet Breddels and the editor Christian Ernsten. The magazine has been discussed and planned in occasion of the show “N.EST the making of the city” held on February 2008 at MADRE Museum, Naples and in East suburbs of the city. 30 journalists, architects, designers, photographers, social scientists from 26 to 73 years old, all born in Naples or adopted by the loose womb of the city, answered to a RSVP invitation made by Volume and wrote a newspaper from the bottom, from the rooms of a visual art museum, from the streets of the industrial East suburbs. The tabloid has been read from Kabul to Helsinki, from Washington to Beijing, from Kiwi land to NY. Read it to understand the city.

euro 1500 each tryptichDesigner, artist, dj, Danilo Capasso studied architecture researching the relation among space event and movement, urban space and sound.
Founder and director of art project N.EST (www.napoliest.it), he was also founder and curator of International Electronic Arts Festival Sintesi, held in Naples and Milan from 2002 to 2005. He is active as artist, curator and producer.
He recently invented, designed and built a fictional marina, Portoallegro, in the Liverpool District of Bank Hall for Urbanism 2009 (Sept.09), after being invited to a residency and a show by Liverpool Biennial. He applies a cross breeding process among urban space, art, creativity and architecture, with the audience in the middle. And with the goal to document urban transformation by questioning alternative uses to regenerate common spaces.
As dj and soundscapist, a.k.a. Danylo, he started to perform on 1991 by being a fair pioneer of electronic music and dance scene Naples- based (techno, deep house, dub, IDM): he divided the stage with some of the major representatives of the International dance in the main European clubs and festivals

On 1997 his first exhibition, Napoli Fotocittà, Dintorni dello sguardo, explores the perception of the moving city with a work entitled 60 km/h. On 1998 he graduated in architecture.
On 1999 he has been selected at the International Award Architektur im kontext (db Architekturbild) and exhibit at Nuremberg, Weimar and Berlin, then on 2000 in Zurich and Cologne.
On 2001 he presents a photographic work on the representation of contemporary cities for Multiplicity, Matrix, that has been published on USE (Uncertain States of Europe, publisher Skira, Italy).
On 2003 he exhibits at the Spazio Erasmus Brera, Milan, for the collective show “Photo: the rising generation” and at Palazzo Reale, Naples, in the occasion of the Quadriennale di Roma for the “Mostra sull’arte contemporanea”.
On 2004 he presents for the first time the photo research CCTV_ closed circuit television, with the video CCTV_Napoli Est for N.EST (www.napoliest.it ) at the International show Stazione Utopia Revisited, Naples, and on 2005 he presents the photo exhibition CCTV_Napoli Genova Milano at Artandgallery no parachute V edizione, Milan and at Museo del Territorio, Biella, for the show Urbana, la città in trasformazione: visioni prospettiche - derive metropolitane.
On 2006 his two first solo shows: Fotografie – CCTV, exhibited at Nowhere Gallery, Milan and “Works”at Gallery Overfoto, Naples.

On 2007 he is invited to International Photo Festival in Rome with his new work, MAY-DAY in the collective “Ereditare il Paesaggio”, held at Museo dell’Ara Pacis and, following, at Museo del Territorio Biellese, Biella. On 2008 the show is also exhibited at Spazio Officina in Chiasso (Switzerland), within the program of Image Biennial 2008.
On the summer 2008 Cimmino works in North India for a photo reportage on the foundation cities. On April 2009 he is invited at the collective show Paesaggi dell’invisibile at Galleria Traghetto in Venice, and, on may 2009, at the collective Clear light at the Festival della Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia, plus the collective Urlo e furore at Nowhere gallery, Milan.
N.EST www.napoliest.it (nest at napoliest.it)Naples East, the city’s eastern periphery, covers over 25 km2 and includes two formerly autonomous towns, San Giovanni a Teduccio and Ponticelli, which were annexed by Naples City Council in 1926 and consequently became impoverished. The first was formerly a rich industrial centre, the second a village dependent on agriculture (with settlements dating back to Roman times). The Naples East periphery starts in the first inner-city industrial area of Naples, Gianturco, which lies only 2km from the old Greek centre of the city, behind the central railway station on Piazza Garibaldi. Naples East is highly polluted, scarcely populated, full of former factories skeletons and not tied up by heritage policies as the rest of the city: it is the only part of the city to be further developed.
N.EST is a think-tank for art and architecture that developed from an online project and has since come to include exhibitions, lectures, performance, urban activism, design and architecture.
N.EST is text to study cities and their evolution, by starting by their industrial and peripheral borders. It has a form of a web database and no-profit design and art think-thank, active since 2004 with the aim to document urban transformations through arts, creativity and new media. Rather than just design and exhibit visual art shows, the N.EST preferred practices are collective designing performances in the real fabric of the cities, that are continuously morphing.
The online project, started and financed still by its members, consists of a grid, a bilingual database and a search engine but N.EST’s core nucleus is an emotional map of Eastern Naples, which depicts the topography of five districts - the streets, warehouses and industrial spaces of the city’s poorest neighbourhoods – as well as the critical issues and potential developments that affect them.
With its site-specific web TV (N.ESTube), content randomizer (N.EST TV) and blog, the whole online platform is open to anyone who wishes to contribute. N.EST asks artists and citizens active in any discipline or profession to join it in trying to create a city from the bottom up: a grass-roots city.
All that is envisioned and stimulated by the artists (who re-write the areas on the database and map) can catalyze a new future for Naples East – at least, N.EST and its allies hope it can!
N.EST is always searching for brilliant partners and has been originated by Danilo Capasso with Giovanni Ferrarelli and Diana Marrone on 2004. Two years ago Massimiliano Rianna joined it.

His work has won him international admiration from amongst others, John Cage and Aleksandr Sokurov. He is Artistic Director of Giardini Pensili, performing arts company & media lab co-founded in 1985, an ensemble based on the collaboration among artists, technicians, theoreticians. Since 2006 co-founder and director of Velvet Factory - space for the arts (Rimini, Italy). As visual artist, he is represented by Fondazione Morra (Naples).
A pioneer in the use of digital technologies and telecommunication systems in art, particularly interested in performing arts as a meeting point of languages, he wrote, composed and directed since 1985 about 25 border-breaking music-theatre works presented worldwide. Parallel to his musical work there is a body of films & videos regularly presented in international festivals. His dramaturgical materials are frequently re-composed in sound and video installations – often site specific and interactive – presented in museums, galleries, and the public space. His work is not easily situated in a particular genre of well-defined movement.

The Neapolitan artist Marco Zezza meets N.EST with his video-artwork Bordo.
He does meet it by opening - on April 4, 2005 - the International Electronic arts festival Sintesi. Bordo has been originated by the collaboration with the T293 Gallery, managed by Paola Guadagnino in Naples.
Created for N.EST, Bordo is the result of the inducement that Naples borders and especially East Naples caused onto the artist.
Bordo was born to suggest new and vital manners to relate with a territory: it is a sequence of pictorial collages and texts, animated by small physical processes (combustion, liquids and gasses transfers).
Bordo suggests also the contemplation as one of the possibilities to metabolize any experience.
For N.EST, Marco Zezza chooses to operate on the Gianturco-Via Brin area.
Differently from what since now happened to artists working on N.EST, the Zezza’s artwork has been first visible into an exhibition space (T293), outside world wide web.
In order to represent the N.EST growth toward a physical dimension that will be subsidiary and complementary to the virtual one, with the creation of events and contests in spaces to be regenerated in East Naples.
