Dit boek, geschreven door Boukje Cnossen en Sebastian Olma, vertelt het verhaal van de broedplaats in het voormalig Volkskrantgebouw vanaf het moment dat een groep van ex-krakers, Stichting Urban Resort, besloot hun expertise uit de jaren tachtig te mobiliseren om een krantenkantoor nieuw leven in te blazen, tot het moment dat het pand zijn deuren heropent als het Volkshotel. Het verhaal zoomt in op de rol van de gemeente, de stichting van oud-krakers die het pand beheerde, en natuurlijk de kunstenaars, creatieve ondernemers en sociale initiatieven die de ruimtes van het pand vulden met hun creatieve initiatieven, wilde feesten en harde werk. Het boek laat zien hoe de broedplaats van het Volkskrantgebouw een stempel drukte op het Amsterdamse culturele (nacht)leven via de successen van bijvoorbeeld het Magneetfestival, maar onthult ook de achterliggende machtsverhoudingen daar waar stedelijke ruimte en creatieve productie samenkomen. 
Aan de hand van het boek gaan we in discussie over de mate waarin broedplaatsen zelfstandig zijn en het belang van broedplaatsen in een andere dan economische zin.

This book, written by Boukje Cnossen and Sebastian Olma, tells the story of the art factory ('broedplaats') in the former Volkskrant building from the moment that a group of ex-squatters, Stichting Urban Resort, used their expertise acquired in the eighties to bring a defunct newspaper office back to life, up until the point that the building reopens its doors as the Volkshotel. The story zooms in on the role of the city government as well as the non-profit organisation which ran the art factory, and pays tribute to the artists, creative entrepreneurs and social initiatives which filled the building's spaces with their creative plans, wild parties and hard work. The book shows how the art factory of the Volkskrant building effected Amsterdam's cultural (night)life through the successes of for instance Magneetfestival, but also reveals the power dynamics involved at the intersection of urban space and creative production. 
Taking this book as a starting point, we'll discuss to what extent art factories can be seen as autonomous spaces and what their importance might be outside of the creation of economic value.
