The Painting, the Drawing and Other Objects
and Situations



From 7 May to 26 June 2011 the Kunsthalle Lingen
will, for the first-time, be presenting an exhibition of works by the
internationally renowned Rumanian artists, Victor Man (born 1974 in
Cluj-Napoca) and Dan Perjovschi (born 1961 in Sibiu). Victor Man represented
his home country at the Venice Biennale in 2007, as did Dan Perjovschi in 1999.
The Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Barbara Gladstone
Gallery in New York have both held individual exhibitions of Victor Manâs works,
while Dan Perjovschiâs works have been shown at an individual exhibition at,
among other venues, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate Modern in London. 

Victor Manâs often surrealistic-seeming paintings,
objects and installations are inspired just as much by personal experience, as
they are by the stories and myths he takes as a source for his work. His art is
a base for a universe of associations and references and Victor Manâs art often
alludes to a world of fantasy, inner moods and hidden fears. Part of the
exhibition, for example, is a work group of pictures bearing the title Pagan
Space, in the centre of which a black, pagan statue appears that seems to be
the focal point of an altar around which the decorative elements are grouped.
The statue itself was a find and, spurred by the impulse of a dream, was
charged with an unusual effect as a metaphor for the primary medium of
knowledge. A further picture series entitled Spells shows
geometric-crystalline colour shapes accentuated by a sometimes sombre,
sometimes lighter setting. In correspondence with lines, these come across as
occult symbols and appear to refer to clandestine circles. Other works are
based on Rumanian daily newspapers in which soothsayers proclaim their
goodwill. The geometry of these monochromatic structures is a reference to the notion
of playing, coupled with secrets still to be revealed. 

The work of Victor Man is complemented in a most
stimulating manner by Dan Perjovschiâs art which will be created directly in
Lingen. Since 1989, he has been contributing drawings to the Rumanian weekly
paper 22, which was initiated shortly after the downfall of Nicolae Ceausescu by
the Group for Social Dialogue.

Whenever Dan Perjovschi is invited to an
exhibition, he reflects on the state of a global world on the one hand, while,
on the other hand drawing on local political and social events. His reflections
are conveyed in drawings which he creates directly on the walls. A world full
of seemingly complex and irrefutable universalities is juxtaposed with mundane
mechanisms of contradictory allocations, such as good and evil, large and
small, strength and weakness, East and West, and the absurdities and cynicisms
conveyed. Political and cultural events currently in the world news are debated
and the structures of hierarchies, inclusions and exclusions, and the
absurdities and occurrences of the present day commented on. As the works will
be created directly in Lingen, they will also reflect certain current events.
Also for the first time, Dan Perjovschi will be showing photographs taken in
the Chinese capital of Beijing.

11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free guided tours: Sundays at 11.30 a.m. and Thursdays at
