Re: [oldboys] Feminism today

There's lifestyle and there's style.

The style thing is particularly pertinent today.
Was listening to another programme on BBC Radio 4/World Service about women
in the punk era.
People like the Slits, Poly Styrene, Siouxie Sioux, and Chrissie Hynde were
being interviewed
about female attitude then as compared to now in music.
Chrissie said there had been no such thing as stylists in the punk scene and
if anyone
came and told her what to wear she would have punched them on the nose.
She'd get up on stage in whatever she happened to be wearing that day.
Poly said if she were a young woman expressing herself in the UK today she'd
be looking to
'bad girl' artists like Sarah Lucas and Tracey Emin for inspiration.

I dont know many teenage women but I am fascinated to know what their
asp/inspirations really are.
I believe they are even more body conscious than I was, obsessed with sexy
fashion and shopping.
I know Lindsay Perth is doing interesting work with Scottish teenagers and I
wonder if she can comment
on this.
Teenage female aspirations tend to be embodied in pop acts like Destiny's
Child, SWV,
Missy Elliot and Miss Dynamite i.e a lot of black female attitude which is
heavily
about style and conspicuous wealth.
All the honeyz with their money....
