The UK, with over 45,000 air expulsions, accounts for for some 27% of the total. (The report did not consider expulsions carried out by other means - such as people expelled at the EU's borders with central and Eastern Europe.) Figures are given for each of the 15 member states, plus Iceland and Norway. Expulsions by air 1999: UK 45,100 Germany 32,233 Austria 20,207 Netherlands 12,204 Italy 12,036 Denmark 9,276 France 8,300 ... An analysis of the report is published today by Statewatch. It also considers the role of deportation "escorts" (immigration officials or police officers) in the member states, EU cooperation measures relating to expulsion, and group expulsions by charter flight. The EP initiative was passed by 13 votes to 10 with the Socialist Group (PSE) voting against.
