switch media: first call for papers switch media: first call for papers conference: the impact of digital media in southeast asia Chiang Mai; 23rd-25th April 2004 The impact of digital media in Southeast Asia is an art and technology conference which aims to look for an alternative perspective of technology in Asia, by bringing together artists, cultural & media activists and academics from different fields from Asian Pacific and the world to discuss and explore digital media, their impact and models for cultural expression in Southeast Asia. The conference shall serve as a focus for theoretical and interdisciplinary approach. The goal of the conference is to create a meeting point for interested parties in Southeast Asian region and the international community to enjoy and cultivate dialogue about new media, mainly (but not exclusively!) from the SEA region to evaluate the contemporary situation with its own artistic approach and expression, its own theoretical and practical difficulties and options for future development. The conference is conceptualized & initiated by the Media Art & Design Center, College of Graduate Study, Chiang Mai University in cooperation with the switch media_ art festival pathiharn electron [supernatural], organized by switch media, Chiang Mai. The concepts for the new media art festival Pathiharn Electron [Supernatural] were developed from discussions regarding the impact of new media on the contemporary cultures of Thailand, overall Southeast Asia, and other countries in the world. Although the festival will examine how practical, technological aspects of new media contribute to various levels of human survival, it will also extend beyond the material and address the humanizing and spiritual perspectives of the field. In relation to how new media affects contemporary reality, the festival will explore levels of physical space as opposed to or in juxtaposition with virtual space. By engaging artists from the Southeast Asian region as well as the rest of the world, the festival will present the fluid exchange among cultures regarding the use of technology and new media. Through new media art, it will address the similarities, differences, and the points of hybridization among cultures. At the crucial juncture when the field of new media is accelerating Thai society and the rest of the Southeast Asian region into the 21st Century, the festival Pathiharn Electron [Supernatural] offers a creative outlet to reflect on new medias influence on current condition and explore the fields limitations and possibilities. +++ Administrativa: Date: 23rd-25th April 2004 Venue: Chiang Mai University Art Museum, Chiang Mai, Thailand Deadline for papers/abstracts (English or Thai; 500 words): 15th February 2004 Abstracts _can_ be send by email to: [email protected] Or by REGISTERED mail to: switch media chiang mai c/o Chiang Mai University Art Museum 239 Nimanhemin Road Chiang Mai 50200 Thailand Acknowledgements for Conference participation will be send out in late February 2004.
