Met's Web Site

Five years ago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art first created its Web site. 
It was pretty rudimentary affair, with only calendar listings and basic 
information about the museum. This week, after two and a half years of 
intense planning involving every department in the museum, the Met has 
introduced a new, undated web site (www.metmuseum.org). It is packed with 
images, including a large portion of the Met's vast collection, and 
information including an interactive calendar, exhibition previews and 26 
educational features.
The site has sections called "My Met Gallery," which allows visitors to 
store their favorite images, and "Explore and Learn," which offers extensive 
resource modules on ancient Egypt and on Byzantine art. Users can create "My 
Met Calendar," a personalized list of preferences, and request e-mail 
reminders about particular events.
"You can see what's happening today or six months from now, when you know 
your mother will be visiting," said Emily K. Rafferty, senior vice president 
for external affairs, who headed the project. "The entire site is meant to 
be a microcosm of who we are, to create a sense of depth that mirrors the 
museum." Every aspect of the Met, from fund-raising and subscriptions to 
education to the collection, is represented.
Ms. Rafferty said the site would be updated daily. "It is like a house that 
can be added to, either out or up," she said. Over time, the museum plans to 
add virtual- reality tours of some galleries, including the period rooms of 
the American Wing, and to double the number of objects from its collection 
that may be viewed online.
