The Feed: 'technology of the Net'
In his science fiction novel 'The Diamond Age', Neal Stephenson describes the
interactive access to all possible information as 'the Feed': corporate
information, entertainment, and even the necesary data to prepare nano-tech
based furniture, toys and the daily dinner. The Feed can be compared with
the common electricity wall-socket, available in any public building and
home, and provides everything needed for daily life.
With the idea of the Feed as a starting point we would like to present the
technical backgrounds of the Internet and possible scenario's for the
future. The Net, nowadays mostly used for e-mail and WWW-surfing, will
become more and more interactive and there will be more possibilities for
its use due to the development of computer-languages and applications. We
will highlight the 'languages' used by computers connected to the Net,
there will be a focus of 3D-aspects of the Net, and we will present the
possibilities of emerging applications.
The form of this afternoon will be an experiment, the audience will be able
to choose the subjects they want to know about. The programme has been set
up as follows:

13.00hrs - Doors open

14.00hrs - Introduction: Hans Heger (NL - TU-Delft), an historical overview
of the Internet (from 1964 until now) will introduce the technology of the Net.

14.45hrs - Short presentation of four 'knowledge sites':
1. Daniël Ockeloen / Rico Jansen (VPRO Digital)
2. Aadjan van der Helm / Paul Boots (TU-Delft + World Online)
3. Thomas van Putten (Artist)
4. Hans Heger (TU-Delft).

15.00hrs - Intermission: the audience can choose to attend the presentation
at one of the four 'knowledge sites'

15.15hrs - Depending on the demand of the audience more in depth information
of the specific subjects can be found at:
1. Daniël Ockeloen + Rico Jansen: on interactivity and the distribution of
functionality through the Net, on Java and on 'shared work spaces'.
2. Aadjan van der Helm + Paul Boots: on human-computer communication and
user-interfaces: history, examples and the future.
3. Thomas van Putten: on the technical language (and its slang) of the Net,
the spatial form of the Net itself and the possibilites of 3D-disclosure of
the Net.
4. Hans Heger: Net-history, Net-development, the infra-structure, (inter)
national control and an overview of other related Networks.

17.00hrs - Brief intermission

17.15hrs - The FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions: in this final part of the
programme the guests from the 'knowledge sites' will speak on the most
common misconceptions about the Internet.

amongst others:
1. Crossings: by Stacey Spiegel wherein several disclosure and navigational
methods for the Net are presented.
2. PING: by Art+Com from Berlin.
