Syndicate: Avatar in Stockholm

Late news: Soda are the only UK artist/group to have been shortlisted for
the Kirklees Media Centre digital public art commission. Soda will be
talking about their work at the ICA in London on June 24.



Avatar
Group show at Moderna Museet, Stockholm
May 20 - August 16 1998 and touring


Following their solo show at the London Electronic Arts Gallery in
January/February this year, Soda's current piece is a collaboration
commissioned for the touring group show 'Avatar'. Showing at the Moderna
Museet, Stockholm, while the city is European Cultural Capital, the show
includes video and photographic works from the Japanese artist Mariko Mori
and Swedish artists Peter Hagdahl, Åsa Andersson, Cecilia
Parsberg, and Carl-Michael von Hausswolff. 'Avatar' is curated by Swedish
Travelling Exhibitions.

In 'Avatar' Soda's work addresses the distinctions and relations between
sculpture and architecture while investigating linked notions of structure
and agency: we ask how we can affect a given environment.

The piece inverts the usual relationship between structure and agency in
which external factors influence an environment. In this work, elements of
the piece are programmed to affect the environment in a dynamic,
architectural choreography.

The distributed installation comprises individual elements directed by a
central microcontroller. Each individual, human-sized panel of Aerolam is
placed in the gallery space, clearly linked to the central control panel.
Signals from the microcontroller prompt each panel to reconfigure its form.
The software ordering the flexing of the panels directs a now logical, now
random choreography of the movements of each individual - a set of
interventions that repeatedly changes the structure of the architectural
space.
