Call for Applicants: New Media Department at Fabrica

Fabrica is the research school of Benetton. Based in Catena di Villorba, a
village 30 minutes from Venice, Italy. Fabrica is housed in a 17th century
villa beautifully restructured by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, and
complete with the latest equipment and facilities.

The Fabrica New Media Department is expanding. In the past seven months it
has produced seven issues of COLORS magazine
(http://www.colorsmagazine.com) and a site for Fabrica (still in
development) (http://www.fabrica.it). Due to positive response to these
projects we've recently been given the opportunity to expand. Both projects
are
interesting structures on which to build and reflect on different
approaches to the medium. We see this as a learning experience, a chance to
step outside the normal corporate environment and work with a bit more
space and freedom.

There is an age limit at Fabrica of 25, so we're not looking solely for
experience, were looking more for talent and skills. We need those who are
technically proficient with a strong and developed background in the areas
of interface, graphics or sound (or ideally a combination). Most
importantly, we're looking for those that think differently, that are not
satisfied with they see on the web and have creative drive behind what they
do and the way they approach it.

The term of stay is flexible, anything from a few weeks (perhaps from other
study or work) to a year. If you're older than 25 and are interested in
working together, we are developing a series of workshops with more
established people who can't afford an extended leave from their work. This
way you could visit Fabrica and experiment with us here in Italy for a week
or two on a project (on Colors or for a client).

We would like to invite anyone interested to submit a small piece made for
the web. You are not expected to spend any more than 10 days on it. There
is no restriction over color, type, style or file size, but it must fit
into a 300 pixel square and have a focus on how you interpret the theme
"balance". The piece can be any combination of text and/or image and use
any development tool- Shockwave, Flash, Java, Javascript, VRML, HTML, DHTML
or any other common web tool. Though it must be fully cross platform and
have some consideration for the problems between different browers. The
more visually interesting and technically tighter the better.

Those interested in coming in September should submit your pieces by the
18th of July 1998 along with an email or html version of your c.v. We will
assemble all or a selection of these pieces together on the Fabrica site
and (through what we see between the pieces and c.v.'s) be inviting people
to come out and work with the team.

If you are interested in contributing or more information, please contact
one of us as soon as possible and we'll tell you how to get copies of the
finished pieces to us.

We look forward to seeing what happens.
