Request for Proposals:
SolarScapes Commission Project at Liberty Science Center

Liberty Science Center (LSC) and GPU Energy announce?
SolarScapes:  An open competition for the commission of two
solar-powered art/exhibit projects.

COMMISSIONS-
To create 1) an illuminated work to serve as a "beacon" in the Liberty
Science Center 150-foot high Tower ($70,000); and 2) an educational and
interactive exhibit station demonstrating the principle of solar power on
an outdoor deck ($40,000).  Both works will be required to operate with
power generated from photovoltaic cells. One finalist will be selected for
each project.  Prior experience with solar power is not required if your
budget includes a lighting engineer as a consultant for this aspect.  All
aspects of the design, and fabrication will be done off-site and are the
responsibility of the artist/designer.  Winners will also give a limited
number of public demo/presentations at LSC about their winning projects.

ELIGIBILITY-
SolarScapes is a unique commission project open to artists, lighting and
exhibit designers, and architects.

SITE-
Liberty Science Center is located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New
Jersey, with views of Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, and lower
Manhattan.

TIMELINE-
On-site Meetings: - Tuesday, June 22 & Saturday, June 26
	(from 3-5:30 pm either day.. mtg. is optional)
Design Proposals Due:  August 1,1999
Notification of Winning Proposals:  September 17, 1999
Prototyping &Public Presentations:  September 1999 - January 2000
Installation: January 24 - February 5, 2000
