<nettime> Midwest Unrest: More Palatable Projectiles Strike Conservatives

Pat Buchanan Doused in Salad Dressing
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=632294

KALAMAZOO, Mich. Apr 1, 2005 - Commentator and
former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan cut
short an appearance after an opponent of his
conservative views doused him with salad dressing.

"Stop the bigotry!" the demonstrator shouted as
he hurled the liquid Thursday night during the
program at Western Michigan University. The
incident came just two days after another noted
conservative, William Kristol, was struck by a
pie during an appearance at a college in Indiana.

After he was hit, Buchanan cut short his
question-and-answer session with the audience,
saying, "Thank you all for coming, but I'm going
to have to get my hair washed."

The demonstrator, identified by authorities as a
24-year-old student at Kalamazoo Valley Community
College, was arrested and faces a misdemeanor
charge of disturbing the peace. He was released
on a $100 cash bond, pending his April 14
arraignment.

"He could have faced a felony assault charge, but
Pat Buchanan decided to not press that charge,"
university spokesman Matt Kurz said.

Buchanan's visit had evoked controversy on campus
because it fell on the birthday of the late
Mexican-American labor leader Cesar Chavez.
Buchanan favors tighter controls on immigration.

"David Horowitz, president of the Center for the

lecture at Butler when he was hit by a pie. "

A conservative activist who criticizes what he calls the leftist
domination of college campuses was struck with a pie Wednesday night
at Butler University.

David Horowitz, president of the Center for the Study of Popular
Culture, had just started a lecture at Butler when he was hit.

Horowitz's supporters followed the assailants out of the hall, and
confronted them with what a witness called "pushing and shoving."
However, the attackers got away.

"There's a wave of violence on college campuses, committed by what
I'd call fascists opposing conservatives," Horowitz said. "It's one
step from that to injury."

After the incident, Horowitz completed his lecture.

Great moments in pie throwing
Chicago Tribune
http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/chi-0504120045apr12,1,933275.story?ctrack=1&cset=true

Last week, two conservatives got hit with pies at
Indiana colleges: David Horowitz at Butler
University and William Kristol at Earlham (a
Quaker school!). That continues a long, glorious
history of pie throwing, which we are delighted
to recount.

- The first pies have been traced to the ancient
Egyptians. The pharaohs' bakers put nuts, honey
and fruits in bread dough, a primitive pastry.

- Movie director Mack Sennett of the Keystone
production company generally gets the credit for
originating the pie-in-the-face gag in his
slapstick silent films, including the Keystone
Kops reels from around 1914.

- Comedian Soupy Sales was born Jan. 8, 1926, in
Franklinton, N.C. He went on to receive an
estimated 19,000 pies in the kisser.

- Laurel and Hardy's 1927 short "The Battle of
the Century" employed about 4,000 pastries in the
largest pie fight ever.

- The 1965 comedy "The Great Race" included an epic cream pie war.

- A gay man smashed a pie into Anita Bryant's
face in 1977 after the entertainer led a campaign
to repeal a homosexual equal-rights ordinance in
Florida.

- In 1984, Bob Bell ended his 23-year run as
WGN-Ch. 9's Bozo with a huge cream pie fight.

- In 1998, three men from the Biotic Baking
Brigade pied San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown as
he was announcing plans for a new football
stadium to house the 49ers.

- Also in 1998, Microsoft chief Bill Gates got
nailed with a pie while entering a government
building in Brussels. Spearheading the toss was
Noel Godin, 52-year-old Belgian pie thrower and
author ("Cream and Punishment").

- Finally in 1998, a banner year for
pie-throwing-civil-disobedience, Nobel laureate
economist Milton Friedman got pied at a
conference he organized on the privatization of
public education.

- A Canadian activist group in 1999 released a
list of 27 potential tart-tossing targets. "The
pie gives power back to the people," one activist
said, "because so many feel powerless in the face
of big politicians and industrialists."

- In October 2004, conservative writer Ann
Coulter got creamed in the shoulder by a custard
pie while giving a speech at the University of
Arizona.

Note: On April 1, conservative commentator Pat
Buchanan cut short his speech at Western Michigan
University in Kalamazoo, Mich., when he was
doused with salad dressing. But that's another
food-protest story.

Pie-thrower group gets subsidy for EU campaign

15 April 2005 - AMSTERDAM ? There was an angry reaction in political
circles on Friday to the news that Leiden-based collective
Eurodusnie has been granted a EUR 40,000 subsidy to campaign for a
no vote in the Dutch referendum on the EU constitution.

Hans van Baalen, an MP for the Liberty Party (VVD) ['Vereniging Van
Dieven' - and in trouble because of his Nazi-past] said on Friday
that the Referendum Commission had made a "big mistake" by granting
a subsidy to this group. He has called on the Interior Ministry and
the Ministry of European Affairs to explain the decision.

"The commission must re-do its work because it only examined the
project aims and not at the people behind [the group]," Van Baalen
said.

"We don't give subsidies to the Hells Angels or [right-wing]
Lonsdale youth for a clubhouse," he said.

He called for the Referendum Commission to get information about the
group from Leiden City Council and the state security service AIVD
before reconsidering the subsidy request.

The subsidy application was submitted by EuroDusnie on behalf of
anarchist group Vrijplaats Koppenhinksteeg, which plans to use the
money for a festival of "debate and music" in Leiden in May.

Two members of the EuroDusnie anti-capitalist collective were
involved in an incident on 14 March 2002 when pies were thrown at
populist politician Pim Fortuyn. The cream pies were allegedly laced
with urine.

Fortuyn was shot dead in Hilversum on 6 May 2002, nine days before
the general election. Although some of his supporters suggested the
two incidents were linked, no evidence of this was ever found.

The activist group was linked to pie-throwing attacks on former EU
commissioner Frits Bolkestein and the Dutch Finance Minister Gerrit
Zalm in 1999.

Fortuyn's LPF party has also reacted angrily to EuroDusnie's
subsidy. LPF leader Gerard Van As said the world appeared to be
turned on its head as "bad behaviour was once again being rewarded".

He said it was "doubly-painful" because the group was linked to
those responsible for the pie attack on Fortuyn, while the LPF was
not getting any funding for its campaign against the EU
Constitution".
